CHANGSHA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Six men were trapped underground after being overwhelmed by a coal gas leak in central China' s Hunan Province Wednesday. Three of the men remain missing, a government spokesman said.Rescuers have confirmed that three of the trapped miners are alive as rescue crews had contacted them with underground communication systems, according to a spokesman from Jiahe County Government.h The trapped workers were gas inspectors and repairmen, the spokesman said.The accident took plane at noon Wednesday in a 30-meter-deep shaft at the Tianxin Mining Company located in Jiahe County of Hunan Province, which is a legal mining company owned by the local township.A tunnel to reach the trapped men has been completed and the rescue work is continuing.The cause of the accident is under investigation.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Flood-triggered disasters have killed more than 1,450 Chinese this year, with another 669 missing, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Lingering rainstorms have been slashing provinces including Shaanxi, Sichuan and Jilin this year, triggering floods and landslides, which have affected a population of 200 million and forced more than 12 million to evacuate, according to the ministry.Nearly 13.5 million hectares of crops were affected by heavy rains and floods, with 2.09 million hectares destroyed, while floods have also leveled more than 1.36 million houses.The total economic loss was put at more than 275 billion yuan(40.6 billion U.S dollars), according to the ministry.The central finance authority has recently allocated 195 million yuan to subsidize local governments in those regions worst-hit by natural disasters such as rainstorms and typhoons.The fund, which has been channeled to Jilin, Guangdong, Sichuan and Shaanxi, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will be used in relocating residents, helping people rebuild homes and offering relief for residents who lost family members.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam agreed Thursday to properly deal with the maritime territorial issues in the South China Sea.This is one of the five consensus decisions made at the fourth meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation, which was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.China and Vietnam signed a package of agreements on the demarcation of their 1,300-kilometer land boundary last November. Foreign direct investment (FDI) that flowed into China in June surged 39.6 percent from a year earlier, resulting in a 19.6-percent year-on-year increase during the first half of this year."Foreign investment will not pour into a country where the investment environment is worsening," Wen said.China will continue both its opening-up policy and improving its investment environment, as the government promised, but structural changes are expected because both China and the world are changing, analysts said.For the past 30 years, China has been wooing foreign investment with many preferential policies designed to attract badly-needed capital, advanced technology and management expertise.
