Yale University will no longer formally call first-year students "freshmen" as the university is officially changing its terminology to be gender-neutral. So instead of being considered an "upperclassman," a student with multiple years of collegiate experience will be officially considered an "upper-level" student. According to Yale's student newspaper, administrators are not expecting students, faculty and staff to change how they refer to freshmen or upperclassmen. The change is one that is merely to be used in official titles and correspondence. “It’s really for public, formal correspondence and formal publications … we’re not trying to tell people what language to use in their everyday casual conversations,” Yale Colleg Dean Marvin Chun told the Yale News. “We’re not trying to be language police.”The new gender-neutral terminology was unveiled in the 2017-18 edition of the student handbook. Yale's student newspaper reported that administrators have been considering the change to gender-neutral terms for several years. (AP) — The acting secretary of Homeland Security said he expected 25% fewer migrants to cross the border this month, as officials in Yuma unveiled their latest outdoor facility meant to detain children and families.The number of illegal crossings would still be too high, but it was a start, he said, crediting Mexico with a concentrated effort to stop Central Americans before they arrived even to Mexico — a push prompted by threats of tariffs by President Donald Trump.The president has seen numbers of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border skyrocket under his term despite his hardline policies and tough-talk. More than 100,000 people, mostly families from Central America, have crossed the border each month over the past few months. Trump sees the monthly border numbers as a benchmark for success, and during previous months when he felt numbers were too high, he threatened to shut down the entire border.McAleenan dismissed the idea that a projected decrease in June was due in part to hot summer months, traditionally a time fewer people crossed."These initiatives are making an impact," he said.Meanwhile, facilities that house detained migrants are vastly overcrowded and advocates and attorneys have decried conditions inside. Instead, they say they resigned because they don't feel they have legal protection from the city of Buffalo.On Friday, all 57 members of the Buffalo Police Department's Emergency Response Team resigned after two of its members, Robert McCabe and Aaron Torgalski, were suspended without pay after bystander video showed officers shoving a 75-year-old man to the ground during a peaceful protest.McCabe and Torgalski have since been charged with second-degree assault. The 57 officers who resigned only left their roles on the Emergency Response Team and are still with the department.Following the mass resignation, the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association (PBA) released a statement asserting it was a "show of support" with the McCabe and Torgalski. But two of those who resigned — who were granted anonymity for this story — say that's not the case."I don't understand why the union said it's a thing of solidarity. I think it sends the wrong message that 'we're backing our own', and that's not the case," one of the officers said."We quit because our union said [they] aren't legally backing us anymore. So, why would we stand on a line for the city with no legal backing if something [were to] happen? Has nothing to do with us supporting," said a second officer.One officer said that it's likely that many did resign as a show of support, but for many others, "that's not true.""The city, (Erie County District Attorney John Flynn), they're not representing those guys at all. It's a result of other animals being shot and the type of bullets being used.The Raptor Recovery Center at Fontenelle Forest has treated nearly 30 birds for lead poisoning this year, including a 4-year-old bald eagle that died as a result of it."She was in pain, she was vocalizing, and unfortunately she died about two hours after I got her," said Denise Lewis, the director of the Raptor Recovery Center.Staff says the issue is a common problem. "They ingest the lead from the environment, either like from (a) carcass that was shot with lead or from lead sinkers that fish swallow," said Betsy Finch, rehabilitation manager at the Raptor Recovery Center.They are asking that hunters change ammo from lead to other types of bullets like copper. Nebraska hunter Douglas Finch made the change and recommends others to do the same. "The copper bullets they retain 95% or better of their weight which transfers that energy into the animal and, in my experience, I think it results in a cleaner kill," Finch said.For now, the dead bald eagle serves as a reminder of change Lewis hopes to see.
