KERNVILLE, Calif. About 45 miles to the west of the quake's epicenter, San Diegan Jose Blanco was watching television on the couch in his parents' home. His three children were playing outside."Banging, jolting, up and down ... eyes were shaking. Just seemed surreal," said Blanco.Blanco says he jumped off the couch and then froze, trying to wait out the shaking."Wow, is this really happening? Just shocked ... Seemed like a good minute. Seemed like forever," said Blanco. When the home finally stopped moving, Blanco ran to his children and found them safe. A few things fell and a few cabinet doors opened, but there was no major damage. In the first few hours after the quake, he felt more than 10 aftershocks. He and his family may not get much sleep."Wondering if there's going to be more, if it's going to keep going," said Blanco.Getting back to San Diego is another concern. A crack that appeared on one of the nearby Highway 178 has been repaired, but Blanco wary of getting on the road. 1005

Jodi Doering, a registered nurse based in Woonsocket, South Dakota, had a thread of tweets go viral over the weekend describing the scene inside the emergency room.Among the tweets, Doering said, “These people really think this isn’t going to happen to them. And then they stop yelling at you when they get intubated. It’s like a (expletive) horror movie that never ends. There’s no credits that roll. You just go back and do it all over again.”On Saturday, South Dakota reported a state record of 53 coronavirus-related deaths. The state has a population of 884,000, which is roughly one-tenth the size of New York City. At its worse, New York City was experiencing nearly 700 coronavirus-related deaths per day.According to the COVID Tracking Project, there are nearly 560 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in South Dakota hospitals. Nearly one in 1,600 of all South Dakotans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19.In a Monday interview with CNN, Doering described her frustration.“I think the hardest thing to watch is that people are still looking for something else and they want a magic answer and they don't want to believe that COVID is real,” Doering said. “And the reason I tweeted what I did is that it wasn't one particular patient, it's just a culmination of so many people. And their last dying words are, this can't be happening. It's not real. And when they should be spending time face timing their families, they're filled with anger and hatred and it just made me really sad the other night and I just can't believe those are going to be their last thoughts and words.”Doering said that nurses are meant to be a last line of defense, and that things like social distancing and masks should be utilized.“There's a thing on the internet right now that says, ‘I'm not your first line of defense, I'm your last,’” Doering said. “And that actually is true in South Dakota. That by the time you get to me and the team that we work with, it might be too late for some. And that is heartbreaking.”South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has resisted implementing mask mandates, even as other conservative governors have relented in recent weeks. Noem's press secretary Ian Fury told the Angus Leader in Sioux Falls that the governor would defy any nationwide mask mandate if implemented by the Biden administration."It's a good day for freedom. Joe Biden realizes that the president doesn't have the authority to institute a mask mandate," Fury said. "For that matter, neither does Governor Noem, which is why she has provided her citizens with the full scope of the science and trusted them to make the best decisions for themselves and their loved-ones." 2667

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — A proposed mixed-use housing complex could put living in one of San Diego's most expensive areas within reach. It's part of a plan to redevelop the former 76 gas station at Pearl Street and Eads Avenue in downtown La Jolla, a station infamous for charging among the highest gas prices in the city. The station has been closed for about the last two years."It's a blighted area on Pearl," said developer David Bourne. "It needs to be developed, and I think this is the highest and best use."Bourne is proposing to turn the former station into a mixed-use development that could serve as an example of future transit-oriented projects. RELATED:Fashion Valley poised for multimillion dollar renovationAfter years of pushback and delay, One Paseo welcomes first residentSan Diego County property sales fall in October, prices increaseHis development, tentatively called Mod'n, for Modern Living, would pack 26 housing units onto the half-acre site, with retail facing Pearl Street. The complex would include 24 market rate studios, one and two-bedroom apartments of up to 800 square feet. The units will be fully furnished to protect the tight quarters from bulky move-ins. The least expensive units will start from ,800 to ,000 a month, with the two bedrooms up to ,800. Plus, two affordable units will rent starting at 5 per month, well below La Jolla's average rent of ,545. "It is intended to showcase the way people are living now," Bourne said. "Smaller units, smaller appliances, in an urban area where you can walk everywhere and you probably don't even have a car."The complex would also include 23 parking spaces. It's currently going through the approval process, but construction could start next summer. 1758

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Court records show that a man accused of killing two people and then himself at a video gaming competition in Florida had been hospitalized for mental illness, according to the Associated Press. Divorce filings from the parents of 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore say that as a teenager he was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and that he was prescribed anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications. The records show Katz's parents disagreed deeply on how to care for their troubled son.Katz's father claimed his estranged wife was exaggerating symptoms of mental illness as part of the couple's long-running and acrimonious custody battle. They divorced in 2007.Authorities say Katz killed two people and wounded nine others Sunday before fatally shooting himself at the "Madden NFL 19" tournament in Jacksonville. 876
