SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce announced a new relief fund for Black owned business meant to keep them afloat during the pandemic.They held a press conference Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park announcing the Black Business Relief Grant Fund.Lance Growth, member of the chamber and CEO of Growth 1031, organized the press conference and says this is going to fill the gap where the government's Paycheck Protection Program fell short, "for the COVID crisis yes this is a light at the end of the tunnel."Growth says about 95% of black owned businesses did not get federal money."I don’t want to say insulting but disheartening where you watch this crisis unfold then you see your government say, 'Hey we know how bad this is we are going to provide you help,' but then you read about the businesses that [didn't get] PPP, and it just folds into the social unrest," he said.He said the grants and microloans will pay for anything from rent to supplies to payroll.Growth said they weren't going to make the application nearly as time consuming and invasive as the PPP, "we’re just going to try and get you this money as fast as possible because everyone is hurting from this pandemic."Applications open Wednesday, June 17, and priority will be given to small disadvantaged businesses in low income neighborhoods.Specific criteria for the grants will be defined Wednesday, according to the chamber.They are expecting a very high demand, compared to the amount they can give out. Four million Southern Californians were expected to travel over Thanksgiving, despite warnings against travel because of the pandemic. The CDC advised people not to travel, asking them to stay home, to avoid further spread of COVID-19. Doctors worry about the effects of this weekend's travel will be seen in a few weeks from now, with a surge of cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. RELATED: Airbnb: San Diego teachers made .7M renting out their home last year"You won't be able to do bed and breakfast, and then there's a huge emphasis on the amount of money on the fee. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city is running behind on a project to restore an iconic bridge that borders Hillcrest and North Park.Now, people in the area are growing frustrated at the construction on the Georgia St. bridge that's causing traffic delays and drivers to use surrounding neighborhoods as shortcuts."Traffic is very very bad because of te bridge, and I have to go around to buy stuff for my shop, and it's taking me longer to get where I want to go," said Milan Misic, who lives in the area and owns the Balboa Perk coffee and antique shop. The city is restoring the 103-year-old bridge so it can withstand an earthquake. The city broke ground on the million project in July 2016, saying it would take a year. But now it won't be finished until next spring.A city spokesman says the delays are because of weather, and unanticipated cobbles and deposits crews discovered in the bridge walls, making drilling more difficult.He added that there is no threat to public safety and it will not raise the cost.You can track the project on the city's website.   1092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The environmental community is concerned that individuals using masks are disposing of the face-covering properly.Dimitri Deheyn is a Scripps Institution of Oceanography research scientist and studies biodegradable objects, something disposable masks are not. He said around the world, researchers are seeing an increase in trashed masks on beaches, which will ultimately end up in the ocean and harm wildlife and our ecosystem.In addition, when the disposable masks are thrown away, the string can become a danger to animals if not cut, so he said if you have to use disposable masks, cut the string that goes around the ear.Deheyn has been working with a company based in Austria called Lenzing that typically makes eco-friendly comfortable clothing from fibers that can degrade, making them better for the environment. He said the company shifted to making biodegradable masks when the pandemic hit, and he’s helped test them.“Basically test them, we put them in the seawater and see if they degrade and yes they degrade,” he said.He said there are U.S. companies that make a similar product, and this is what people should be wearing instead of disposable masks. He said reusable masks are another solution to helping save the environment.“If you are acting as an individualistic human being, and you oppress nature, at the end this could be very bad for us as a human society,” he said, encouraging everyone to do their part. 1457
