CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – Police are investigating the death of a woman whose nude body was found in the middle of a Chula Vista street early Thursday morning.At around 12:30 a.m., a person called 911 to report a naked woman lying face down in the middle of the 200 block of Shasta Street, near Second Avenue.Responding police officers checked the woman and found she was not breathing and had no pulse.Despite CPR attempts, the woman -- described as Hispanic, in her 20s, and a Chula Vista resident -- was declared dead at the scene.Police told ABC 10News there was no immediate indication the woman was struck by a vehicle. On Friday, police identified the victim as 33-year-old Laura Rodriguez.Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said, "It's very suspicious at this time. The manner of death is unknown. At this time, we don't know why this person was here and why they were left here in the roadway."Officers are questioning neighborhood residents as part of their investigation."It's a bit of a shock. This is a very quiet neighborhood ... About 20 minutes before she was found, I heard a vehicle revving up its engine and going around the corner," said neighbor Roger Murray.The Chula Vista Police Department is trying to locate witnesses or anyone with information regarding Rodriguez's death. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had more than 7,800 signatures.“It's quite the injustice, it's quite unfair, and it's plain out wrong,” said Barrera.Peralta has not spoken publicly about her demotion.On Monday August 10th, an in-car protest will take place at the district office with her supporters, including educators, families, and leaders of the local Filipino community. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista native Sally Chand always knew what she wanted to do in life: follow in her family's tradition and join the military.Chand's father, her uncles and all of her brothers were all Marines. Her grandfather served in the Army. Chand eventually joined the Marines as well. Her son followed in her footsteps. After graduating from Castle Park High School, Chand served in the Marines for 22 years. Chand made history as the first female and Hispanic war interrogator translator in Chinese Mandarin. Later in life, Chand married a Marine who served for 27 years, Sergeant Major Michael Chand. He was killed while working as a civilian contractor in Iraq. Chand says being a female Hispanic Marine was a challenge in a male-dominated field. However, Chand says she always saw that challenge as motivation to continue working hard. 1068

(KGTV) -- A traveling caravan was one of several events that took place around San Diego County to commemorate Juneteenth.Angie Stuart, a retired Southwestern College professor, said with the current unrest she felt it was important to show support for the African-American community, so she organized a caravan.On Friday morning, cars were decorated with posters, balloons, and streamers. People from all backgrounds came together to support one cause -- Black Lives Matter.The caravan gathered to mark this important day in history, Juneteenth -- the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.RELATED: The history behind JuneteenthKatie Ness Santana brought her three kids to the caravan. She wanted them to learn about this significant day in history and why it’s important to have equal rights for all.“We just really wanted to celebrate this important day and raise awareness so the Black community throughout San Diego know we support them. Her way of bringing attention to the changes that need to be made.“I have a son that’s 39 years old. He’s one of the big, tall, dark skinned. (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego and Regional Airport Authority have reached an agreement over a fee that threatened to delay the revitalization of Chula Vista's waterfront.The Airport Authority agreed to withdraw from a lawsuit challenging a .50 rental car fee added to car rentals at the San Diego International Airport to fund a parking garage for the Chula Vista Bayfront project.Under the settlement, the Port also agreed to a number of provisions, "that protect a number of Airport Authority interests."RELATED: Dispute over airport fee could delay Chula Vista Bayfront project“We have reached a resolution that addresses the funding mechanism for a parking facility that will serve the public for many years to come.
