BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A recent circular of China's film and television watchdog to cut smoking scenes in films and TV dramas has received welcome from supporters of tobacco control.Xu Guihua, deputy head of China Association on Tobacco Control (CATC), a non-profit organization, said the order of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) demonstrates government determination to protect public health rights."Frequent smoking scenes in films and TV dramas do not accord with China's stance on tobacco control and mislead the public, especially the youth," said the SARFT in a recent circular.Tobacco brands or signs and smoking scenes with juveniles present should not be allowed to appear in films or TV dramas, it said, adding that scenes which have to show smoking should "last as short as possible."Hailing the order, Xu said the communication through media including movies and TV is among those factors that can influence people's attitude toward smoking.Deng Haihua, a spokesman with China's Ministry of Health, also said the SARFT's move will help prevent people, especially the young, from being misled by smoking scenes on screens.In a survey report issued in August 2010, the CATC said it found smoking scenes in 31 movies and 28 TV series after monitoring 40 Chinese movies and 30 local TV series.Another survey by Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention also showed students tend to follow the fashion after seeing actors smoke on TV or in films.China has more than 300 million smokers and 540 million more suffering from secondhand smoke.What is especially worrisome is that 11.5 percent of the country's juvenile smoke and the ratio is even increasing, according to experts.

The autistic children still had slightly larger brains, but they had grown at the same rate as the comparison group.This finding could lead to a better understanding of the genes that drive autism, which, in turn, could lead to earlier identification and treatment of the disorder, said study researcher Joseph Piven, MD, according to media report.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its Bing search engine will become the default search and mapping application on Blackberry phones.Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced the partnership with Research in Motion (RIM), which makes Blackberry phones, at the Blackberry World Conference in Orlando, Florida, according to a Microsoft blog post.Ballmer said Microsoft would invest uniquely in the Blackberry platform in addition to its own Windows Phone platform."Bing will be deeply integrated at the BlackBerry OS (operating system) level," Ballmer said.Central to the collaboration, Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the United States and internationally, said Microsoft's Bing team in the blog post.Meanwhile, Bing is also shipping as the default search experience and map application for the newly released Blackberry Playbook, a RIM tablet computer which made market debut on April 19.On Tuesday's Blackberry conference, Ballmer called Google's Android ecosystem "chaos" and the Apple iOS "limited" before he hailed Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry. The South African Press Association (SAPA) reported on Tuesday that Karl Otto, head of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) announced the surveillance tool at a conference in Durban.Called Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT), the system monitors and tracks vessels in waters south of the equator.Otto said the introduction of the LRIT followed concerns over the safety of seafarers, the safety standards of ships within South African waters.Otto said there were high levels of cargo at risk, such as fuels and oils.He said reasons for installing the system included the number of shipwrecks along the South African coast, and the threat of pollution of the marine environment by ships."It also serves as a mechanism to prevent piracy."Otto said the satellite system has the capacity to identify and track vessels up to 1,000 nautical miles (1,850 km) from the South African coastline as well as South African-flagged vessels anywhere in the world."This is a revolutionary development in the security of our seas," he said.SAMSA was determined to protect South Africa's seafarers, its coastline and the marine environment, Otto said.
