SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. The cases had tapered off in the past week but a spike was reported Monday.Ten recruits were admitted to an off-base medical facility while the remainder are being cared for at MCRD. The source of the outbreak is under investigation, according to the Marine Corps."Our immediate focus is identifying, isolating and treating recruits who present symptoms," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a beloved torrey pine - saved from the chopping block more than seven years ago - is once again in question.Along tree-lined Long Branch Avenue, one tree has captured the hearts of Jeff Ray's family."My kids loved it.  They touch it all the time.  It's wonderful," said Ray.The towering torrey pine is believed to be about 90 years old."It signifies the beauty of nature and the history of the area," said Ray.The history includes safety concerns. In 2010, with the sidewalks buckling, city experts deemed it a safety hazard, concerned the leaning tree would fall over. Upset neighbors hired their own arborist. Eventually, the city relented, deeming the tree stabile and repairing the sidewalks.  Since then, the tree has been granted Heritage status, giving it extra protections. Still, safety concerns remain.  On Wednesday afternoon, a city advisory panel met and the city's forester told the group the tree isn't just learning. It's actually on the move."The tree has moved an inch-and-a-half in the last two-and-a-half years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The convention center expansion initiative will not make the November ballot even though San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer gave it his best shot.Faulconer's ballot measure proposal to fund the convention center expansion, get homeless people off the streets and fix roads needed five votes to pass.  It only got 4.The vote came after Faulconer asked council to convene a special meeting with just 24 hours' notice.  The mayor requested it after learning there weren't enough valid signatures collected to place the measure on the November ballot. 602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Termed-out San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman is taking aim at what he says is too much outside influence behind the scenes at City Hall.In an interview with ABC 10News, Sherman said too many of his colleagues vote based on their own political preservation."Unfortunately, too many politicians are looking down the road and at what office they are going to run for next," Sherman said. In a recent op-ed, Sherman said in politics he has learned that handshakes and signed memos are worth a "bucket of spit." He said political gadflies, union reps, party reps and political donors are wielding too much power of council members. Sherman believes this is the reason the city still has not come to an agreement on regulating short-term rentals, and is approving labor-friendly development projects."One of the things that bothered me the most in politics is how different special interest groups can literally come down, sit in the front row, and dictate to council members what they will and won't do if they want their support in the future, and unfortunately most of them do," Sherman said. Sherman said he is the exception because he did not base his council career on a run for higher office. He did run for mayor in 2020, losing in the primary. But he said chose to run because of encouragement, and because no other Republican entered the race. Michael Zucchet, who heads the city's Municipal Employees Association, said Sherman and other politicians generally define "special interests" as those that disagree with them. "I wasn't very moved by his comments and they struck me as sour grapes," Zucchet said in an email. "It seems like pure hypocrisy to me. Not to mention baseless, transparent whining."Sherman, who represented the Mission Valley area, is now going back into insurance sales. His departure will leave Chris Cate as the only Republican on the City Council because Sherman's seat flipped to Democrat in the November election. 1978
