HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said. Hawaiian authorities are urging sightseers to stay away as Leilani Estates residents return to check on their neighborhood, which is threatened by lava and toxic gases emerging from fissures in the subdivision.Big Island's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, spewing molten rock and high levels of sulfur dioxide.Cracks emerged in the volcano's East Rift Zone — an area of fissures miles away from the volcano's summit. He might have done it for Instragram or YouTube fame, but now a man who crossed a barricade guarding a hippopotamus enclosure at the Los Angeles Zoo is looking at potential trespassing charges after he was filmed spanking one of the animals.Video shows the man climbing the fence outside the hippo enclosure at the LA Zoo and sneaking up on two hippos, named Rosie and Mara. The man’s approach is very cautious, and then when finally close enough, he slaps one of the hippos on the rear before rushing back over the fence and taking a moment to celebrate his feat.The LAPD confirms they received a report of trespassing at the zoo and are investigating.In the video, Rosie, the hippo that was slapped, does not show much of a reaction, but her mother appears startled and looks up as the guy is still in the enclosure. It’s not clear if the man knows he’s being recorded, but clearly he’s showing off. The video started making the rounds on social media last week.While hippos at the zoo do have human interaction, this kind of treatment can create an unpredictable situation.The zoo released a statement Monday reading, in part:“The Zoo would like to remind everyone that it is never acceptable for a guest to enter the habitat of any animal at the Zoo, excluding our staff-supervised animal encounters. It is a privilege to observe these rare and endangered species, but they are still wild animals and their space must be respected at all times. Our first priority is always to keep our guests, staff, and animals safe.”Zoo officials have since put “No Trespassing” signs up around the zoo while police continue to look into the matter.According to California law, it is prohibited to enter zoo enclosures, and doing so may lead to a misdemeanor charge or infraction, L.A.
