ZHENGZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a bridge collapse last Saturday in central China's Henan Province has risen to 37 with 29 still missing, rescue headquarters said at Tuesday midnight.Among the killed people were three tourists. For a moment, the river was full of struggling people."Li was caught by a tree branch and rescued by other villagers.Witnesses say the two ends of the bridge collapsed first. And the whole bridge fell in about one or two minutes, most people on it did not manage to escape.The bridge, built in December 1987, was over 200 meters long and more than 10 meters high. It was the only bridge on a about 4-km section of the river.An initial probe shows the dilapidated bridge collapsed after fallen tree trunks became stuck under it, blocking the passage of the raging flood waters, Luoyang officials said.Officials said they were continuing the investigation and vowed to severely punish those who were to blame.The flood has damaged a local tap water plant, cutting drinking water supply to the county's residents. Transport to the county was also disrupted by the flood with some bridges and roads damaged.

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will begin a special four-month campaign to crack down on the production and use of counterfeit automobile license plates on Thursday.Police around the country will target trade in fake license plates, registration papers and other license plate-related crime, the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday in a statement on its website.Violators sometimes forge license plates for military and government vehicles to enjoy privileges like free expressway charges.Some drivers use stickers to cover their license plates to cheat police.The campaign will begin June 10 and finish Oct. 10.Police carried out similar campaigns during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the National Day holidays in 2009 to create better traffic conditions.Statistics with the ministry show police nationwide seized about 267,000 counterfeit license plates in the 2008 campaign and 183,000 fake plates in the 2009 campaign.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - China's economy is unlikely to see a "double dip" in the second half of this year, and the economic growth for the remaining six months is expected to surpass 9 percent, according to a Bank of Communications report released Saturday.China's economic growth will slow down in the next half year, while consumer prices would fall from its peak, said the nation's fifth largest commercial bank in a report on the outlook of China's economy for the second half of 2010"For China, it is never a recession unless the economic growth drops below 7 percent," said Lian Ping, chief economist with the Shanghai-based bank.The growth is sustainable and healthy for the economy as the growth rate stays around 9 percent, he said.China's exports, a major force driving the economic growth, would continue to rebound in the second half, and the growth for the entire year would stay above 20 percent, according to the report.For the latter half of 2010 consumption is to grow by 18.5 percent from a year ago while investment growth will drop steadily to about 21 percent due to government support to the private sector and strategic emerging industries, it said.Increasing labor costs, resources and food prices is expected to push up China's consumer prices, but the growth would be restrained in the second half due to the slowing money supply and eased imported inflationary pressures, it said.China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 11.1 percent in the first six months of this year from one year earlier, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.China's consumer price index stood at 2.6 percent in the first half of 2010, according to the NBS, while retail sales and fixed asset investments grew 18.2 percent and 25 percent year on year, respectively.China would maintain a stable monetary policy for the rest of the year since the global economic condition is still complicated, and an interest rate hike is unlikely to be seen, said the report.The bank estimated that new loans for the entire year would stand between 7 to 8 trillion yuan (1.03 trillion to 1.18 trillion U.S. dollars).The bank also forecasted in the report that the Chinese government would remain tough with the property sector, but there is little possibility for additional curbs on the market. Property investment would largely fall, but there will not be a significant decline in property prices.Lian suggested that the Chinese government pay attention to the possible cumulative effect of policies on the economy and keep market liquidity at a reasonable level.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - China's Ministry of Agriculture Friday urged local authorities in flood-hit regions to step up efforts to resume agricultural production and create favorable conditions for the autumn harvest following this summer's severe floods.Local departments were ordered to accelerate water drainage, restore damaged infrastructures, strengthen field management, and plant mung bean, potatoes and buckwheat, which have short growth periods, to make up for losses, according to an official from the ministry.The official also required departments to clear away and carry out bio-safety disposal of dead livestock, while increasing epidemic control measures.As of July 21, more than 7 million hectares of farmland in China had been destroyed by torrential rains and floods, according to data from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
