The CDC released a report on Friday saying that a rare strain of influenza is particularly severe among children this flu season. According to the CDC, the influenza B virus infection is more common among children and can cause complications, sometimes resulting in deaths. According to CDC figures, 18 deaths among children are attributable to the influenza B strain from September through December. A CDC expert told the Washington Post that despite this year's flu vaccine not being a match with this particular strain of the flu, a vaccine could still be beneficial. “They are close enough so the vaccine offers some protection,” Lynnette Brammer told the 672
The Cincinnati Reds Twitter account might have summarized the events of Tuesday night best: "There's a lotta stuff going on rn."There sure was, as that "stuff" included Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig being involved in a benches-clearing brawl mere minutes after news broke he was being traded. The Reds were hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. The National League Central division teams already didn't like each other. Their rivalry goes back years, including a benches-clearing incident back on April 7 in Pittsburgh.Tempers would flare again, but first, a little after 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, news of a blockbuster deal began to circulate. 687

The House on Tuesday rebuked President Donald Trump over one of his signature issues, passing a resolution to overturn his emergency declaration to unlock money for wall construction at the US southern border. The vote was 245-182. Thirteen Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the measure. The resolution will next be taken up by the Senate, where it will put Republican unity to the test, though Senate leaders have signaled they will not bring it to a vote immediately. It is not yet clear how many Republicans will vote for the resolution in the Senate, but it looks likely to pass the upper chamber, despite the fact that Republicans hold a majority. That would be yet another blow to the President, who has said he will veto the resolution if it comes to his desk.A test of Republican unity in the SenateIf four Republicans join all the Democrats in the Senate to pass the resolution, the measure would then face a presidential veto. The White House formally issued a veto threat on Tuesday afternoon.Congress would then need an overwhelming majority -- two-thirds of its members -- in both chambers to overrule the President. It is unlikely that there would be enough support on Capitol Hill to overturn a veto.So far, there are three Republicans who have signaled they will vote in favor of the resolution. And Senate GOP aides fully expect the resolution to pass when it is brought to the floor.GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is 1464
The family of the Dayton, Ohio, shooter published glowing obituaries of both the gunman and one of the first casualties in the massacre -- his younger sister, 22-year-old Megan Betts. The obituaries were published Tuesday on the website for the Conner & Koch Life Celebration Home in Bellbrook, Ohio, but the remembrance for gunman Connor Betts was removed Wednesday at the family's request, according to the funeral home.Connor Betts' parents later updated the message on their son's obituary page."Stephen and Moira Betts apologize that the wording of the obituary for their son Connor was insensitive in not acknowledging the terrible tragedy that he created," the message said. "In their grief, they presented the son that they knew which in no way reduces the horror of his last act. We are deeply sorry."The obituary for Betts, who was killed by police after he took nine lives in the August 4 mass shooting, was shorter than his sister's. Both writeups encouraged people to donate to an ecology institute in nearby Yellow Springs instead of sending flowers.Friend who provided body armor faces chargesA now-removed page for the shooter also included 21 photos. They ranged from his younger days doing martial arts to more recent images of him drinking beer and smiling with family members. The obituary said he was a grill cook who loved reading, video games and music. He "will be missed immensely by his friends, family, and especially his good dog Teddy," it says.Neither obituary mentions the shooting, or that Betts was killed by her brother.A young man drawn to violenceInvestigators and those who knew Connor Betts have described him as bent on violence. Former classmates said he kept a list of people he wanted to kill or rape, and he was in a "pornogrind" band known for its graphic, violent lyrics. The 24-year-old also enjoyed shooting, a friend said. A Twitter account that appears to belong to him -- and whose bio proclaimed, "I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back" -- retweeted far left-wing and anti-police posts.Armed with a .223-caliber high-capacity rifle, Betts fired 41 shots in less than 30 seconds that night in Dayton, killing his sister as well as eight seemingly random bystanders, police said.In a statement following the shooting, the Betts family said they were "shocked and devastated" by what happened and were cooperating with police. They pleaded for privacy while they mourned.A woman answering the phone at Conner & Koch said the obituaries came from the Betts family. Another woman answering the phone on a follow-up call said Megan Betts' obituary also appeared in a local paper, while her brother's had not.A younger sister about to graduate from collegeThe Dayton Daily News published 2753
