SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego authorities are investigating a string of robberies involving thieves wielding hammers.San Diego police and sheriff’s department officials confirmed four incidents are being investigated, and they are trying to determine if the robberies are connected.At around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a Circle K store on Tierrasanta Boulevard due to a robbery carried out by multiple males armed with hammers. It is unknown what the thieves took in the robbery.About an hour later, a man told police that several men with hammers confronted him at a convenience store near Black Mountain Road and ransacked his car before fleeing.Several minutes later, police responded to a 911 call from a driver who reported being flagged down on Maya Linda Road by a man who said he was robbed by a group of people with hammers.A fourth robbery involving a group armed with hammers was reported at a 7-Eleven in Mira Mesa, authorities said.No injuries were reported in any of the incidents, ABC 10News learned.Authorities do not have detailed descriptions of the assailants. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel. As part of our Making It in San Diego initiative, we want to make sure veterans know there is potentially money available to them. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spoke to professionals in the field, as well as two veterans who are currently applying for benefits.Linda Urbina, Director of Client Services for Golden Care explains the different benefit packages. Aide & Attendance, while difficult to qualify for, will go a long way in paying a veteran's assisted living costs. A veteran would have to be found to have 30 percent of their medical needs deemed 'service-related.' Anything less than 30 percent could be covered by a benefit called Home Health Aide Care. That provides assistance with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, personal grooming, bathing, toileting/incontinence care, transferring, and transportation. A veteran would have to need assistance with at least two of these ADL's to qualify for this program.Urbina has gone into homes to find a veteran whose needs are not being met and has called adult protective services. Later she finds out they could have received help from the VA. She sees wives "bent low from the burden of care giving" and veterans who "feel guilty" for being a burden. He strongly suggests a veteran "go talk with a veteran services officer at the VA., ask questions, sit down with someone and see if you might qualify for help." He acknowledges the VA is over-burdened, but he tells his clients not to give up. He says persistence pays off. It disappoints Watt to see someone wait years or decades before coming in. After years of what he and his wife describe as a frustrating battle with the VA, Simon now receives Homemaker benefits which give him an in-home caretaker 12 hours a day, and a pension benefit of 20 percent of his Navy pay. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans should get their flu shots before the flu season typically starts, county health officials said Wednesday.Most flu cases are reported between the end of October and April or May, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.It takes about two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop immunity to the virus, said officials.“People should get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season gets here,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available across the region.”342 people in San Diego County died of the virus during the last flu season, officials said. Most of the deaths were among those over 65, with underlying medical conditions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County Board of Supervisors held an emergency meeting behind closed doors Thursday evening to discuss how to potentially keep businesses open after Gov. Gavin Newsom denied removing San Diego State’s COVID-19 cases from the county’s total case rate.The meeting, though, yielding no new actions by the county.In a statement, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said since the board took no action, "it would be inappropriate to comment on the deliberation.""In general, I believe we should be fighting COVID-19 and not the state of California. We do not yet know what our case rate will be next Tuesday and will have to evaluate that number in order to understand any possible impact," Fletcher said.The county is now at risk of moving back to the most restrictive purple tier if the case rate is higher than 7.0 by next week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police are searching for a woman they have identified as a person of interest in a recent homicide case in the Talmadge area.Police believe 25-year-old Sheila Camarena may be linked to a deadly shooting that occurred on Sept. 18, in the 4400 block of Euclid Avenue.According to police, in the early morning hours of Sept. 18, officers responded to a reported shooting in which a 33-year-old Black man was injured.The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified by police as Mychael Farve.A witness said the suspected shooter may have fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, but police did not verify the witness’ statement.Camarena is Hispanic, 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighs 170 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes, but police noted Camarena is known to dye her hair blonde and/or red.According to police, Camarena is considered armed and dangerous.Anyone with information on her whereabouts or the Sept. 18 case is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1153
