SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road.The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County COVID-19 case total rose rapidly over the weekend and health authorities have reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases seven times in the past eight days.County public health officials reported a single-day record of 497 new positive COVID-19 cases and one additional death on Sunday, bringing the county's totals to 13,334 cases and 361 fatalities.On Friday, the county reported 440 new cases, the highest number until Sunday. The day before, the county reported 436 new cases.The death reported Sunday was of a woman who was in her early 60s, officials said. The woman had one or more underlying health conditions. 664

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has joined 17 other California school districts in filing lawsuits against Juul for marketing its e-cigarettes and related products to children, attorneys said Tuesday.The suit is one of several recently filed against the San Francisco- based vaping company, which could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the litigation.Cajon Valley Union's suit is one of three filed by San Diego County school districts, joining San Diego and Poway Unified.RELATED: San Diego Unified School District suing JUULThe lawsuits allege negligence and nuisance on the part of Juul, claiming its advertising campaigns targeting young people have caused an e- cigarette "epidemic," which has "severely impacted" the school districts by interfering "with normal school operations."The school districts are also seeking compensatory damages to offset financial losses the districts allege resulted from vaping-related student absences, as well as extensive costs the districts incurred to establish outreach and education programs regarding vaping and enforcement infrastructure such as vape detectors, surveillance systems and extra staff to monitor e- cigarette use among students."The youth vaping epidemic created by Juul has significant costs," said John Fiske, shareholder for plaintiff's attorneys Baron & Budd.
