HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.
BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese state councilor said on Friday that the Confucius Institute is facing a "new starting point", calling for increased cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries via the institution.While addressing the opening ceremony of the fifth conference of Confucius Institutes in Beijing, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said that the institute is being offered new opportunity given exchanges of the diverse cultures in the world and China's wider opening-up."After five years' development, the Confucius Institute is now standing at a new starting point," said Liu, also president of the Confucius Institute headquarters council.The Confucius Institute, named after ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, is a non-profit public institution which aims to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.Up to now, China has set up more than 320 Confucius Institutes in 96 countries around the globe since the first one was established in 2004, said Liu.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also attended the opening ceremony of the annual conference.
Amman, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II on Wednesday met with Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, who is on his Middle East trip to boost ties with Arab countries. They discussed bilateral and regional matters of common concern during the meeting.The Jordanian king said China is an old friend of Jordan. The two countries have a lot of common interests and share similar views on various international issues. China and Jordan are cooperating well in large construction projects, industries and defense and securities.The king also conveyed his gratitude for China's economic and political supports to Jordan, and stressed that the two countries should further strengthen their exchanges and cooperation in all aspects. JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.
SHANGHAI, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The first annual development report for east China's metropolis Shanghai was released Thursday, pointing out new strategies to build the city into an international economic, financial, trading and shipping center by 2020.The Development Report on Shanghai International Economic, Financial, Trading and Shipping Center was released by the municipal Development and Reform Commission and the municipal Development and Reform Institute.The report reviews the efforts and progress in building Shanghai on four fronts and makes proposals for future development.Shanghai set the goal of becoming the center in the four areas in 2009.At the ceremony marking the release of the report, scholars gathered to discuss Shanghai's development.In terms of becoming an international economic center, Jiang Yingshi, president of the Shanghai Society of Macroeconomics, said that Shanghai should draw on the World Expo effect to enhance its service-oriented economy, regional integration, and cultural development.To become an international financial center, Xiao Lin, deputy chief of the municipal Development and Reform Commission, said that the key task in the next decade is for Shanghai to become the RMB products trading and investment hub with world class financial services.In terms of becoming an international trading center, Yuan Zhigang, economics professor at Fudan University, said that efforts should be made to develop high end products and build Shanghai into a shopping paradise.In terms of becoming an international shipping center, scholars pointed out the importance of a modern shipping service system.The development report will be released every year starting in 2010 to keep track of each breakthrough along the way, said Xiao Lin.
