SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. Watters says he was able to recall most of the brewery's 550 employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities Tuesday identified the man killed during a Jet Ski crash over the weekend.According to the San Diego County medical examiner, 21-year-old Darius Kennedy died after a boat struck his Jet Ski.The medical examiner says he disappeared under water but emerged. People in the water helped Kennedy, who was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head and torso. He later died.The crash happened near the north end of Ski Beach around 6:30 Saturday.The driver of the boat that crashed into the Jet Ski was questioned and the boat taken in for evidence. The name of the boat driver hasn’t been released. 638

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego County's back country communities brace for the prospect of losing power, political leaders are starting to take aim at the idea of pulling the plug on them.San Diego Gas and Electric has notified upwards of 30,000 customers that it could cut their power Thursday if it deems necessary to prevent a wildfire. At a news conference in San Diego Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom praised SDG&E as a leader in wildfire prevention, but expressed frustration at the situation. He directed most of his anger toward Pacific Gas and Electric, which has cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Northern California to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires. She said the utility is in communication with fire departments and has crews and arborists deployed across the county. "The population here in San Diego really need to be mindful that this is about their safety at the end of the day," Griffin said. SDG&E began the practice of cutting power in 2013. That's a big change from the 2007 wildfires, which investigators say happened as a result of SDG&E equipment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s new gig economy law was meant to help rideshare drivers and other freelance workers get better benefits, but some critics say it’s threatening the spirit of Christmas itself.Those critics are mall Santas, who have traditionally been hired as independent contractors through third-party bookers or employment agencies.Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), those workers must be reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.“Lorena Gonzalez, she might kill all the Santas. She might kill the Easter Bunnies,” said Steve Schafer, the president of the San Diego chapter of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas.Some Santas warn that bookers may go to great lengths to avoid paying employee benefits. “I don't know how someone can justify this,” said Jerry Tamburino, a Santa who has worked for more than a decade at a large commercial store.Tamburino said his agent notified him Tuesday that she would replace him and other Santas at a chain of California retail stores with out-of-state St. Nicks.“That's what [the booker is] being forced to do to address -- or evade -- or stay in business with this stupid law,” he said.Bringing in out-of-state workers to skirt AB-5 would violate California law, since labor laws apply to anyone performing work in the state, said Gonzalez’ office. But Tamburino said it would be hard for regulators to enforce.Malls and stores could hire Santas directly as independent contractors, Gonzalez’ office noted, since that kind of relationship passes AB-5’s three-pronged test.To do so, Tamburino said he would have to form his own LLC and said he doesn’t have the experience to run his own business.Tamburino said he would begin reaching out to other Santa-booking agencies in hopes they will hire him as an employee, but there’s a lot at stake: he receives about half of his annual income from Santa jobs. 1938
