SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- Opening statements will likely begin Thursday morning in the retrial of Kellen Winslow II, who is charged with raping a woman in Encinitas and an unconscious teen in Scripps Ranch in 2003. Winslow was previously convicted of raping a homeless woman and exposing himself to two others. After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges. Those charges included rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. RELATED: Kellen Winslow II to face second trial in North San Diego County sex assault caseSuperior Court Judge Blaine Bowman declared a mistrial on those counts. The 35-year-old son of former San Diego Chargers legend Kellen Winslow was acquitted of committing lewd conduct in front of Jane Doe 5 on a separate occasion. The jury was unable to reach consensus on rape and kidnapping charges involving a 54-year-old hitchhiker allegedly targeted last March in Encinitas, and a 17- year-old girl who was allegedly raped in 2003 at a Scripps Ranch house party. 1128

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Thursday that five years after it was destroyed in the Syrian civil war, the ancient Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria has been digitally reconstructed by the university library's Digital Media Lab using 3D methods and artificial intelligence applications.Inspired by a past collaboration between the library and UC San Diego's Levantine Archaeology Laboratory, the project resulted in the digital preservation of more than a dozen lost reliefs, sculptures, frescos and paintings, all made publicly available on the library's digital collections website.Destroyed in 2015, the Temple of Bel has been called one of the most important temples in the entire Middle East -- along with Lebanon's Baalbek -- and served as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient art and architecture, a statement from the library said. It attracts more than 150,000 tourists annually.Through the use of more than 3,000 publicly available digital photographs taken over the course of a decade, the library recreated the structure using Pointcloud, an online viewing platform."This project underscores the library's commitment to engaging in collaborative efforts to better understand how the university can support emerging teaching and research formats," said Roger Smith, interim associate university librarian for scholarly tools and methods at the UC San Diego Library. "It also allows the library to better plan for our role in acquiring, preserving and sharing scholarship while incorporating new media and data formats."The digital photographs used to create the virtual rendering of the Temple of Bel were sourced from open-access repositories such as the NewPalmyra project, the Roman Society, Oxford University and individual tourists, then populated into Pointcloud, which allows users to interactively explore the once- massive temple compound. Additionally, artificial intelligence applications were used to isolate the temple's important features from other elements that may have appeared in the images, such as tourists, weather conditions and foliage."This new technology has allowed the Library to combine image data from many different sources," said Scott McAvoy, manager of the Library's Digital Media Lab. "For example, a photo from a Polish tourist visiting in 2010 can be combined with a photo from a Japanese tourist visiting five years later to extract 3D features. These images have provided the basis for the reconstruction of this site--without them, we would not have been able to embark on or successfully complete this project."To view the UC San Diego Library's digital recreation of the Temple of Bel, visit http://lib.ucsd.edu/templeofbel. 2703

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A colorful moment for four San Diegans today. They've been color blind their whole lives, but thanks to a new pair of special glasses...that's about to change."Eventually when I got to high school, and realizing I was color blind was one of those things, like, oh, that's why I couldn't see that or I couldn't see that," said Ricardo Solano. Solano is one of about 300 million people around the world who are color blind. But as a research associate for a biotech company, there are days when he needs a little help from his colleagues."One of the main dyes they use is like red and green to differentiate things," he said, laughing. "It's a big contrast apparently, but I can't see the contrast."Solano has a good sense of humor about it, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't wish he could see the full elegance of a San Diego sunset."Just enjoying the beauty of life," he said. "I like to go backpacking and outdoors and stuff."For people who are color blind, pink looks gray, red looks brown and the colors red and green can look almost white-ish."Color vision deficiency is passed down through the father's genes," said Corey Ulz, an optician at Scripps Poway Eyecare. He said things can look dull and colors, washed out."It basically makes the colors that you and I would normally see normally not as vibrant," he said. "A little more muddled."On Monday, Solano and three other San Diegans got to see vibrant color, thanks to a special pair of enchroma glasses.Their reactions and expressions were heartwarming. "Red. I feel like a little kid right now haha," Solano said, smiling. The pair of glasses do more than make the world a little brighter. Solano hopes they'll make work easier, too. 1760

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A popular Thai restaurant in the College Area has been broken into for the second time in three weeks. At Sala Thai, there are sizzling entrees and simmering frustrations. "Saw the mess on the floor and thought what's going on?" said owner Chira Svangvitaya.A look at the surveillance video gave Svangvitaya the answer. Just before 5:30 Monday morning, a man in a hoodie is seen creeping into through the back door. He heads right to the cash register but finds it empty. He grabs some paperwork, empties the change dish and moments later, he leaves. It isn't for long. "He walked in and out three times, like he's not afraid of anything," said Svangvitaya. Two more trips nets him armfuls of stuff, including a computer, iPad, iPod, checkbooks and a case of soda. Near the end, he takes off his hood - and Svangvitaya's heart sank."I feel so sad and annoying. I don't know what I did to him," said Svangvitaya. The intruder is a stranger to her, but appears to be the same man who broke into the restaurant early Halloween morning. On that occasion, he used a crowbar to mangle the lock and damaged the register while grabbing 0 in cash. He also nabbed five tablets and a computer, crippling her online delivery business.Svangvitaya spent 0 to add a deadbolt after the Halloween break-in. This time, the intruder destroyed the repaired lock and the new deadbolt and went right on in. On the menu now are more costly repairs and a serving of nerves.    "I'm scared he will come back," said Svangvitaya. Svangvitaya, who has run the restaurant for nearly 30 years, says she has no idea who the man is.Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1736
