A 15-year-old boy from Virginia earned a free cruise thanks to his Snapchat account handle.Darian Lipscomb of Prospect, Virginia, received a request from Carnival Cruise Lines to trade his Snapchat username (@CarnivalCruise) for a free trip, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.The company showed up at his home to convince him.“I answered the door, walked outside and saw my name on a big truck. I was really surprised,” he said.Lipscomb said he chose the username in 2012 (he was 9 years old at the time) to share snaps from his cruise experiences.“When I was 9 years old, I went on a cruise and got really excited and wanted to share it with my friends,” he said.Carnival sought out the name because it’s their brand name. The cruise line began an entire campaign to woo Lipscomb. They sent signs to Lipscomb's hometown to draw the teen's attention, including one on which Carnival Cruise’s new “chief fun officer” Shaquille O’Neal asked if anyone knew about Lipscomb, Fox News reported.The company showed up at Lipscomb’s home on Tuesday night and offered his family a free trip on their newest ship if he traded them his Snapchat name.He accepted the deal. (KGTV) -- More than 2,000 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of a million dollars or more were lifted by helicopter out of Rancho Penasquitos Wednesday.Drug Enforcement Administration officials tell ABC 10News, the illegal grow was found near a popular trail in the Del Mar Mesa Preserve Tuesday."In a city area to have an outdoor grow of his magnitude is extremely uncommon; we see these frequently in the backcountry," Sgt. Mark Knierim, Group Supervisor of the DEA Narcotics Task Force Marijuana Eradication Team.During the plant removal process, Knierim said a second grow location was discovered."We found a secondary area, another 50 plants were growing there, and then we found a processing area," said Knierim.He said approximately 300 to 500 pounds of processed marijuana ready for distribution were also discovered."Based on what we've seen historically, I would say this is most likely related to a cartel," he said.While recreational marijuana use is legal in California, the high taxes, permits, and fees for legal dispensaries may sway some people to break the rules. Knierim says a cannabis black market is now thriving in San Diego County."A black market has been created because of that, because people can do this at a fraction of the cost of having to have a licensed marijuana grow and make just as much money, if not more than what they're making at the licensed dispensaries," he explained.This year, Knierim said the DEA has discovered ten illegal outdoor grows and more than 50 illegal indoor operations."We've seen a tremendous upswing in people obtaining a piece of property, typically in our backcountry area of San Diego County, setting up greenhouses and setting up illegally without having permits," he said.While charges related to marijuana are typically misdemeanors in California, the extreme environmental issues with grows like the one discovered can lead to serious consequences."You have a lot of environmental issues, and all of those will be felonies," he said.Garbage, an encampment, and propane tanks were discovered at the grow in Rancho Penasquitos, but Knierim said other issues typically include native plants and trees being removed and illegal fertilizers and pesticides being used."The other issue is pesticides, they'll put pesticides out there that kill any of the animals that come in the area because the animals will eat their plants," he said.The DEA has not yet located anyone responsible for or linked to the illegal operation. 2505

(KGTV) One of the biggest city-owned office spaces sits vacant and may do so for a little while longer.The City of San Diego acquired the 19-story tower at 101 Ash St. in the beginning of last year in effort to consolidate staff into a new space, but various delays have kept the renovation from being completed.Officials signed a lease-to-own contract for the old Sempra Energy building and have been paying more 5,000 a month plus operational costs since January of 2017.The city was supposed to move in July 2017 and the estimated daily cost for the vacant structure is a little less than ,000.“I do believe the city has bungled this decision from the beginning starting with the purchase,” said San Diego City Councilmember Barbara Bry.Bry was elected to council after officials voted to acquire the building for million and says the issue can be traced to how city staff briefed council just before the purchase.“At the time city staff told the council that the building was in excellent shape and the million in tenant improvements was enough,” added Bry.Records indicate the city has paid more than million in rent and roughly million in operating costs since taking over the property.Bry is working behind the scenes to mitigate the matter before the costs balloon any more, but estimates it will be at least six months until staff can move into the 101 Ash Street building.The City of San Diego says more than 1,100 employees will work there when the renovation is complete and they plan to move into the building sometime in fiscal year 2019 — which begins in July. 1617

A 64-year-old Painesville Township, Ohio resident was hailed as a hero after authorities say he stopped a man who chased a mother and her two children from their home after he allegedly broke in.Police said the resident, Thomas Jones, opened his door after he heard his neighbor pounding on it and yelling for help.According to authorities, Jones' neighbor and her two children had just run from their house after a 30-year-old man allegedly forced his way into their home through the back door. The suspect chased the woman into her bedroom and then laid down on the floor claiming someone was trying to kill him, police said.The woman was able to escape the bedroom and run from the residence with her 5 and 7-year-old children and call 911.Listen to the 911 call below. Warning: The call contains graphic language.A short time later, the suspect came across the street and onto the porch in an attempt to gain entry to the house where the woman and her children took shelter.Jones and the suspect fought until deputies arrived, at which time the 30-year-old was taken into custody.The suspect was identified as Bobby Collier, of East Jackson Street, Painesville.Police said Collier had an active warrant out for a parole violation. It also appeared that he was under the influence of an unknown drug.Collier was charged with aggravated burglary, burglary, assault, criminal damaging, and aggravated trespass.Jones later told the sheriff's department, he "only did what anyone would do."The sheriff's department said they "commend Thomas Jones for his selfless act and thank him for his outstanding efforts." 1643
