LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV)— Scientists all over the world are now studying last night’s 7.1M earthquake near Ridgecrest, CA. Seismologists say we should be expecting another big quake in the near future. It seemed like deja vu — a 6.4M followed by a 7.1M, just one day later. “Some people would like to call them separate events, but I don’t think they are separate events,” UCSD Seismologist Dr. Debi Kilb said. Kilb believes neither jolt was a foreshock or an aftershock. She considers these two quakes “mainshocks,” in what is called a “doublet sequence.”“Because the space and time of these earthquakes are so close together, we are beginning to call them an earthquake doublet. So that includes the pair of 6.4 earthquake and the 7.1 earthquake,” Dr. Kilb said. Not only did it shake for several seconds, tremors were also felt from across the state, and even in Arizona. Like the first big earthquake on July 4, the 7.1M was another rare one. The quake was not along a known fault line. Instead, scientists say this may map out a brand new fault.“It was a right lateral fault, meaning that the [earth’s] material on this [east] side moved to the right and down and the material on this [west] side moved up,” Dr. Kilb said. Luckily, California’s most massive quake in 20 years occurred in a rural area, meaning injuries and damages were minimal. (WTVF) — Rutherford and Wilson County deputies are investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle on Sunday afternoon.Deputies received a call about a white box truck parked at Crossroads Market around 10:30 a.m. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said the box truck played audio similar to what was heard before an RV exploded in downtown Nashville on Christmas morning.WATCH LIVE:Officials said due to the investigation, Highway 231 from the Cedars of Lebanon State Park to Richmond Shop Road is shut down.As a precaution, nearby residents are being evacuated during the investigation into the truck.Officials said the driver of the truck traveled from Rutherford County into Wilson County, where he was stopped on Highway 231 by deputies and detained. 781
