SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews responded to a small brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in a highly residential area.According to firefighters, the blaze broke out on the 2500 block of Sumac Drive near Azalea Hollywood Park.Crews were quickly able to stop the forward rate of spread before flames spread to nearby homes.In total, the fire burned three fourths of an acre.  395

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homes burned overnight Sunday as the Valley Fire raged through the East County, burning thousands of acres and prompting a state of emergency declaration.Video from the scene showed structures and vehicles scorched by the flames. So far, 11 structures have been destroyed by the fire.As of Sunday at 8:47 p.m., the fire has so far scorched 9,850 acres and is 1% contained, Cleveland National Forest says.Evacuation orders have been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Overnight into Monday, fire crews say the fire is expected to remain active because of the lack of overnight moisture.Structures are being threatened in the Carveacre and Lawson Valley, Wood Valley, Lyons Valley, and Deer Horn Valley. The agency added that power lines that supply a large portion of San Diego County are also threatened.SDG&E says they are working with CalFire to solve any outages due to the fire, but need to wait for approval for their crews to be allowed into the area and to re-energize power lines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For several months, San Diegans were invited to weigh in on the Port Master Plan proposal. It's the Port of San Diego's first comprehensive update in nearly 40 years, aiming to reflect changes in the needs and priorities of the region. The Port manages 34 miles of San Diego Bay and Waterfront along Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, and San Diego. When the Port published the proposed master plan in April, several communities voiced major concerns; two of the most vocal being Coronado and Point Loma residents. "We have this little slice of history, and I think it's our obligation to preserve, so it's enjoyed generations to come," said Cameron Lilley, a multi-generational Point Loma native.For months, Lilley has been garnering community support in opposition to some of the proposals impacting Shelter Island. "We started digging into it and quickly realized that there were so many points that really didn't consider the locals in the restructure of our community," said Lilley. Some of their primary concerns:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docksThe Port received nearly 3,000 comment letters in response to its initial proposal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Downtown several huge murals cover plywood boards that protect businesses shuttered during the pandemic, as they reopen, those murals are coming down."It was definitely, I don't know, surreal." The Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said it was surreal seeing a familiar place always packed with friends completely empty.As the pandemic wore on, Colonero noticed a change."You could slowly see the shadow work its way over downtown," Colonero said. Then he got a call from the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I said well we aren't looking to spend too much money right now while we're closed. He said, 'No no no, we just want to beautify downtown and put a whole different spin on it for anyone walking around." It was an idea he could get behind.The partnership recruited local artists, including Pandr Design Co., to paint seven murals downtown between April 27th and mid-May.Some had inspirational messages, like " Stay Strong" and "Things will be okay".Neighbors are loving it."It was exciting to see this art in the city," Two-year-resident MJ Hasoneh said."It was a very beautiful thing that they did and I'm grateful for that," Neighbor Juan Gonzalez said."Honestly it's so nice to see the artwork, obviously all these places have to be closed right now," Ali Calder said while walking her dog.Now that businesses are reopening, the artwork is coming down."I mean they were doing so much beautiful work on them, of course I'm glad that they're taking them down, but it was very good to see because it lifted a lot of people's spirits," Gonzalez said.Colonero shared the same sentiment, "it was kind of sad taking them down, but obviously very excited to open up have people look in and see all the renovations we've done."He and other downtown businesses hope to make up some of their losses during this trying time.The partnership is storing the murals for future use as temporary displays or if needed on other buildings. 1972
