SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While hundreds of thousands of San Diego County residents are receiving the mail-in ballots they asked for this week, some residents are receiving mail-in ballots whether they asked for them or not.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu tells 10News about 41,000 people this election is living in precincts where there are not enough voters to field a polling place."When you think about all those political jurisdictions participating in the election and all those boundary lines that overlap one another, it's going to create various pockets throughout the entire county," says Vu.YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: Local, national 2018 election newsVu says any precinct with fewer than 250 registered voters can become an automatic mail ballot district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When professors at San Diego City College weren't prepping for fall semester, they were getting in on a little TikTok action thanks to English professor Christy Ball."I watched a lot of TikTok this summer, I fell in love with all the silliness in America and I really needed it when all the bad news was coming and coming," Ball said.She teamed up with 30 of her colleagues "to let students know we understand this isn't the ideal learning environment but that we believe in them, and we are so committed to their success and we're going to work with them the whole way." Together, they created a 2-minute TikTok-inspired clip with messages like "We're in this together," "You're not alone," and "We are listening."The video's editor and SDCC English professor Kevin Gossett said, "Putting something out like this is a good reminder that we're ready for this. We've been doing months and months of training in so many different ways just for this moment to support you."Gossett said it took a few weeks to edit the video but the hardest part was teaching writers how to TikTok."I did zoom recording sessions where I was walking them step-by-step. I'm like 'Throw it in air so it looks like someone threw it at you' because a lot of people didn't understand 'film magic.'"Ball added, "We recognize this is super strange seeing your class and their kids in the background, pets everywhere, so we wanted to play with that and have fun with the video."Overall, Ball said she wanted one message in the video loud and clear: "We care more about their well being than we do the assignment, we know we can help them get the work done. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While America's current border with Mexico has stood since 1848, the wall — or "barrier" — between the two countries is not as old.The divide has seen patchwork fencing over much of the area, largely leading to President Donald Trump calling for a new wall to be constructed.Here's how the current U.S.-Mexico border stands:THE CURRENT WALL...The current barrier between the U.S. and Mexico was settled in the Boundary Treaty of 1970. The treaty resolved any pending differences the countries had regarding the dividing line.This physical border stretches 654 miles from California into Texas, until hitting 1,300 miles of borderless separation. The full border, however, runs from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for a permanent wall to be constructed along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with technologic improvements in surveillance and security. San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Troops will soon arrive at several bases throughout San Diego County to provide support U.S. Customs and Border Protection as the migrant caravan approaches.According to the United States Northern Command, troops are being sent to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton, Naval Air Facility El Centro, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma.The Pentagon confirmed Wednesday that as many as 7,000 troops are being deployed to three states for support, though President Donald Trump told reporters as many as 15,000 could be sent.According to ABC News, 15,000 is roughly the number of troops deployed to Afghanistan and three times the number in Iraq."As far as the caravan is concerned our military is out, we have about 5,000-8 (thousand), we'll go up to anywhere between 10 (thousand) and 15,000 military personnel on top of border patrol, ICE and everybody else on the border," Trump told reporters Wednesday.Related Stories 997
