SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok. His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan. That was one of the many things credited with the successful rescue of the entire soccer team. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Trips to the grocery store can be tough on the wallets of families trying to make it in San Diego.According to the USDA, a family of four can spend anywhere between 0 and ,300 a month on groceries alone. The bigger the family, the more you spend. San Marcos resident Melanie Anderson says the grocery bill for her family of six was around ,500 a month.“I went to the store with no plan. I would go there and let the store tell me what I needed,” Anderson said.RELATED: USDA's meal planning guide for stretching your food budgetAnderson, a stay-at-home mom of four children, said she and her husband were interested in traveling more so they decided to take a look at their budget.“I realized I wanted to save money so that I could spend it on unforgettable things,” Anderson said.Once all the numbers were in place, they realized they could make changes to their grocery bill.RELATED: Ocean Beach duo cook up 'foodie' meals on a day budget“We were wasting food, we were throwing away food, we weren't planning,” said Anderson. Now the family spends between 0 and 0 a month on groceries.Anderson says her strategy is 'meal planning in reverse'. She focuses on creating dishes around the food she already has and only buying meat, bread, and produce that are marked down or on clearance. One of her biggest tips is calling the grocery stores in advance.RELATED: How to budget when you're on an inconsistent income“First, call the grocery store and ask them what time do you clearance whatever item you’re looking for. Whether it’s the meat department, ask to speak to the meat department. If you’re specifically looking for organic produce, ask that. They are very agreeable in letting you know that information.” Anderson said. According to Anderson, the system is faster than her old trips to the store. “I blaze in there, I look at the produce, I look at the deli meat, I look at the regular meat, the bakery items and I am out of there in ten minutes,” Anderson said. RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeSome of the items in her fridge include organic mushrooms, usually .99, marked down to .49. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When you book a flight, your base price may not represent the final bill due to mounting airline fees. As 10News examines ways to make it in San Diego, we have solutions for saving money on travel. It's not your imagination: fees are part of the way airlines do business."Instead of just one price for everything, it's now an a la carte menu," said AAA spokesman Allan Gundy. The hidden charges don't just apply to your luggage. Gundy says fees can climb for seat selection, reservation changes and cancellation, beverages, and in-flight wifi.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting to paradise on points this summerBefore you book, consider investing in a refundable ticket if you believe changes are possible. Also, many airlines charge higher fees to cancel within 24 hours of a flight, so act quickly if you know your travel plans need to be altered, AARP reports.Remember to download movies or games before you fly or, if you must have wifi, Grundy says to "sign up for a monthly subscription service like gogo, which is what most of the major U.S. airlines use."Food prices are high on planes, but you can buy snacks to take through TSA checkpoints and pick up beverages after security.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: What to know about using Tijuana airport's Cross Border XpressGundy also recommends you don't book the cheapest flight you find online because it may not be that great of a deal."Look at what all the additional fees would amount to and look at the total ticket cost," said Grundy. As for cutting down or skipping those fees altogether, there are a few things you can do. "There are airline branded credit cards that as a perk may offer free luggage," advises Gundy. You can also dodge fees by reaching out to a travel agent to find the best deals. 1798
