"I just know they killed my son and they shouldn't have," said William Lewis, Jr. about the 18-year-old gas station clerk who fatally shot his son Monday night. It happened at the 76 gas station on Detroit's east side. Detroit police said when the clerk saw Joshua Lewis, 30, allegedly stealing from a coin machine, he picked up an AK-47 and fired a single shot through the safety glass. Lewis was killed by the round that pierced through the safety glass. "A quarter machine. My son got killed over a quarter machine," Lewis said. The gas station clerk, who is the owner's brother, was arrested. Prosecutors are reviewing a warrant request in the case. Family members and others dispute the allegation that Joshua was stealing from the machine. They said he was playing a video game that malfunctioned and he was shaking the machine in an attempt to get his money back. "Now I don't have my son."Community activists from several organizations held a press conference at the gas station Wednesday to make it known that they don't ever want to see the gas station open as long as it's in the hands of its current owner or his relatives. A spokesperson for the City of Detroit's Buildings, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department (BSEED) said the gas station does not have a license to operate or a certificate of compliance. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Around the world there are more than 100 safe injection sites, in countries like Canada, Australia and Spain. However, in the U.S. there are none. “In 2017, 1,217 Philadelphians died of overdoses. Last year about 1,150,” said Philadelphia’s former mayor, and the state’s former governor, Ed Rendell. Rendell has been leading a fighting for Philadelphia to open the first safe injection site in the country. He joined the organization Safehouse in this effort shortly after his best friend’s son overdosed on heroin. “When John Decker died, it became personal,” added Rendell. “Decker wasn’t my son, but I knew him since he was a 2-year-old boy.”Safe injection sites provide a place for users to inject drugs under medical supervision. The proposal has landed Rendell and supporters of the plan against the federal government. The Department of Justice sued Safehouse last year to block the site but then earlier this month this call happened. “It’s kind of a nuance. He just said it’s not unlawful activity,” said a board member of Safehouse who was on speaker phone in Rendell’s office. The call described a judge’s decision minutes earlier. The federal judge denied the Trump administration’s motion to block Safehouse from opening a safe injection site under the federal Crack House Statue. “It is clearly a victory,” said Rendell during the call. A victory against the D.O.J for now, but Rendell and Safehouse still have to win over the public. There’s a lot the criticism around the idea of a safe injection sites, some argue one in the U.S. would be promoting the use of opioid drugs rather than curbing it. “Ridiculous! No one is going to get hooked on opioids because they think of themselves well if I get her back and always inject in front of a medical personnel,” Rendell responds. However, many in the community of Kensington, where the safe injection site would be located, add additional concerns. A Union Pacific train hauling lumber and other chemicals derailed and caught fire early Wednesday morning while crossing a bridge over Tempe Town Lake, which caused a portion of the bridge to collapse.More than 90 firefighters from the Tempe Fire Department and other nearby agencies responded to the southern portion of Tempe Town Lake where they found several train cars on fire. Flames could be seen running the length of the bridge, sending dark clouds of smoke billowing into the air near Tempe Beach Park.Several firetrucks were seen spraying water on the flames for several hours Wednesday morning, while a fireboat was helping to spray water onto the flames and remnants of the fire from the lake.Tim McMahan, a spokesperson for Union Pacific Railroad, said in an email that eight to 10 train cars were reported to be on fire. He said none of the train's crew were injured, but said one person was treated for smoke inhalation. When the south side of the bridge collapsed, three tank cars fell below it. Two of those cars were hauling cyclohexane and the other was hauling a rubber material, McMahan said in an email. Cyclohexane is a class ii combustible liquid that smells like acetone or peppermint, according to the CDC's website.McMahan said none of the three tanks were involved in the fire and were not believed to be leaking any material.As a result of the investigation, several roadways near Tempe Town Lake, including portions of the Loop 202 Freeway, have remained closed throughout much of the day.
