Studies show the greatest risk for a data breach is employee negligence. “Somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of successful attacks on organizations now stem from phishing,” cybersecurity expert Ross Jordan said. Ross Jordan with High Touch Technologies says phishing is a way for foreign groups or companies to gain private information from a company by targeting the employee usually through email. Scammers have become advanced enough to appear as a person or organization you trust asking for your password or credit card number. “Phishing is something that’s usually sent out by bots. Literally just blasted out to hundreds if not thousands of emails at a time. And they’re hoping for that one na?ve person to follow the link, and when they do, you’re literally opening the doors to the kingdom,” Jordan said. Employees are often tricked because the email contains a reactionary ask telling somebody they need to share personal information right away. “They’re taking advantage of our human nature. And when somebody needs your help, and somebody needs an action from you, you want to respond, you want to do something,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, the best way to prevent these attacks is to train your employees. Commercial General Contractor, Pinkard Construction, is one company leading by example. Technology Manager Eric Schmeer says models that used to be on paper have now become fully digitized using laser scanners, drones and 360 degree cameras. “All of these devices, all this information, it’s all computerized, it’s all digital, it’s all connected to the internet. And so when you’re running these multi-million dollar projects and all that information is digital, it’s really, really important to protect it,” Schmeer said. For that reason, Pinkard Construction takes time to educate its employees on what an attack could look like. “Teach people just the fundamentals about how to analyze an email, and determine whether it looks phishy or not. And what to do when they’re not sure about links and whether they should click them, and how to figure out where they go,” Schmeer said. The company also fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to come forward with questions. “Nobody is ever hesitant to forward an entire technology team here and say ‘Hey is this legitimate? Can I click this link? What’s gonna happen here?’” Knowing you could be just one click away from killing your company, it’s always OK to ask for help. “Just ask. It’s very simple. DENVER, Colo. – Medical training, tactical moves, and gun range practice might not be what you expect to learn as a schoolteacher, but for some, it’s something they choose to learn to help protect their students. “It’s pretty intense training,” said Paul Gregory, one of the instructors for the three-day training session put on by nonprofit FASTER Colorado. “We want people who are willing, who are able, who are wanting to step up and take that extra responsibility to be here.” About a dozen schoolteachers, faculty members, and church security members attended this training. But since FASTER Colorado started offering classes in 2017, around 200 people have gone through the course. All who participate are volunteers. “It’s unfortunate that we have to have teachers or educators or whomever else come through this course, but it’s the way that it is,” Gregory said.“It’s the mindset, medical training and of course very advanced firearm skills,” said Laura Carno with FASTER Colorado. FASTER Colorado isn’t the only organization to offer training like this – similar training is offered in other states and through other organizations. Currently, about half of the states in the U.S. allow schools or districts to give permission to individuals – like teachers or faculty – to carry guns, according to the Giffords Law Center. “I’m not just a teacher, I’m not just a military guy, I’m a dad,” said one of the participants of the training. He chose not to share his name to protect his identity, so we will refer to him as Edgar.“Most schools that we have talked to, have a policy that if anybody on their armed team ever displays their firearm, they’re off the team,” Carno said. Schools across the country have different approaches to school safety, from security officers to school resource officers, and medically trained staff. “There’s no single solution,” Edgar said. “There has to be a range and there has to be a defense and depth. CISCO, Utah - In the Eastern Utah desert, the air is dry, and the cold is biting. Winter is coming, and the matron of town needs to prepare. “It’s good to push yourself, I think. It’s really easy to stay at home and watch movies and I think I was trying to avoid that,” said Eileen Muza, who owns Cisco, Utah. No Netflix for this woman of the wild west. Cisco, Utah, is a ghost town alright. It's an hour north of Moab, which is where you'll find the closest grocery store. It popped up in the 1880s as a saloon and filling stations for the railroad companies. Without the trains, it wouldn’t be there. Muza is the town's owner and the caretaker. “Even though everything here is sort of harsh, she’s sort of weirdly soft,” said Soren Hope, an artist staying with Muza. About five years ago, Muza bought some land, covered in old, disintegrating buildings and a few broke down automobiles. Muza wouldn't say how much land she owns or how much she paid for it, but the few parcels she owns is less than an acre and the county says it's worth less than a new car. There is running electricity, but no running water. If you need to use the facilities, you'll be using a composting toilet outside. Muza was a city girl from Chicago before relocating to Cisco. “I actually camped, I had a little tent set up. Yeah, and I was really scared, I was like totally terrified,” said Muza. But five years of living in Cisco has changed Muza. “Basically a hardened criminal at this point," Muza said. "I’m not afraid to yell at people, tell them to leave.” But don’t let that hardened exterior fool you; Muza still has a goal. She wants Cisco to be a place where people can come from all over and explore their artistic side. “It’s a really good place to stay focused on your work, because there’s not that many distractions really,” said Muza. And that’s where Hope comes in. She’s from New York. She's the only other person living in Cisco right now. “Brooklyn, and I’m here on the artist residency,” said Hope. The artist residency is something Muza and her sisters started. They let artists come out and use the space for free. In fact two of the artists a year get a 0 stipend. There's no requirement for the artists to complete anything, just use the space to create what they want. Hope has been using her time to draw. She says she wants to imprint the desert onto her brain. And she also draws sketches of the chickens. “I was only scheduled for two weeks, and then I’m just gonna stay here an extra week, and who knows, maybe I’ll never go back home,” said Hope.That’s the kind of place Muza wants to build. She wants to do it for as long as she can, but, “I hope I’ll know when I need to quit. I hope I’ll understand, if it happens.” Muza says living out there can take a toll on you. An employee for Oakland County doing work in Commerce Township, Michigan, was injured while removing a political sign that was incorrectly placed in the road right-of-way. There were several razor blades attached to the bottom of the political sign. There were two political signs with several razor blades attached to the bottom. The sheriff's department is investigating the incident, and has taken the signs into custody. The employee was taken to Huron Valley Hospital for treatment of his hand.
