GUANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A fishing boat with at least 13 crew aboard has been missing for a week in waters off the coast of south China's Guangdong Province, authorities said Friday.The boat, registered in Yangxi County, Yangjiang City, was unable to be located at its anchoring spot in Dongping Port at 3 a.m. on Dec. 16, when other boats in the port that were taking shelter from strong winds received the boat's distress call, Yangxi County marine affairs officials said.Winds of up to 72 kilometers per hour started blowing on Dec. 15, whipping up five- to six-meter-high waves, the official said.The family of the boat's owner, Feng Zixing, reported the boat missing on Dec. 17, after private searches failed to find the boat or its crew.Feng and most of the missing crew are from the county's Lanpao Village.A search for the boat had found nothing by 7 p.m. Friday.The 28-meter-long, 5-meter-wide boat was built with steel in 2001. It was equipped with radar and walkie-talkies.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to the United States is vital to pushing forward bilateral ties, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhang Yesui said Saturday.In an interview with Chinese journalists in Washington, Zhang said this year marks the 40th anniversary of the rapprochement between the two countries as well as the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century.Zhang noted that China-U.S. relationship is at a critical period, with two countries making strides in vigorously developing cooperation in various areas, while new challenges arise. JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A rural endowment insurance scheme, which is being operated on trial basis in part of the country's rural area, may bring an end to the tradition of rural seniors who depend on their children for financial support.Under the insurance scheme introduced in September last year, farmers across the country, who aged 60 years or older, each can receive a pension of 55 yuan (8.3 U.S. dollars) paid by the government per month."I never dreamed I would receive a pension like urban residents do," said Liu Fengyan from Nanlin Village, Pingyi County, in east China's Shandong Province."My wife and I receive 110 yuan in total each month and that is enough to subsidize our daily expenses," Liu told reporters.Liu, together with hundreds of thousands of other elderly rural Chinese across China, is one of the first to benefit from the insurance scheme.The Chinese government has vowed to expand the scheme 10 percent per year and cover the whole country by the year 2020.Those under the age of 60 will have to pay 100 to 800 yuan per year into a fund so they can draw the pension once they hit 60 years of age."Farmers are enthusiastic about the program, and nearly 90 percent of farmers in the pilot areas in Shandong have joined the scheme," said Liu Qianjin, deputy director of the Rural Social Insurance Department of the Shandong Provincial Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.Previous pension programs that were not widely accepted because their funding came from the farmers themselves.
