SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday marked the first weekend San Diego County restaurants were under indoor dining restrictions and they've gotten creative to stay afloat during the pandemic.Monday the Governor announced San Diego County joined the state's watch list due to the spike in coronavirus cases.The county announced bars, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums, and cardrooms will need to shutter indoor operations Monday night at midnight.Saturday on Harbor Island, Coasterra debuted a "pop up" dining experience on their 'float' that normally hosts events.Executive Chef and Partner in the Cohn Restaurant Group, Deborah Scott thought their event space on the water (dubbed The Float) was a perfect place for extra seating. Their sister restaurant Island Prime had to close it's doors, due to the new restrictions.So the Island Prime, moved to an island.On the 'float' they can seat up to 68 people, that's 68 plates that Island Prime can now sell at a time. Scott said they were booked Saturday, their first official night, but are not filling it to capacity.She said they want to make sure things run smoothly."My biggest fear is that everyone is going to come out here and have dinner and go, 'Can you just move Island Prime out here?'" She said chuckling. The same sentiment was shared in Escondido where they kicked off the first weekend of street-side dining.One lane in both directions down Grand Avenue is shut down between Maple and Juniper Streets to make way for the extra tables, chairs and umbrellas.A huge opportunity for indoor venues like The Grand Tea Room.Owner of The Grand Tea Room Lousia Magoo said inside she can seat about 50 people, "so bringing more out here, I could probably seat 30 people at a time so it really means everything to us."Magoo also sits on the Downtown Business Association Board and said they've dedicated ,000 in supplies for the restaurants to help with creating their outdoor dining space.Saturday she said they handed out 50 umbrellas and are expecting more tables and chairs Monday, providing San Diegans a dose of normalcy both on the water and curbside. 2134

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University is going to lose its one and only Christian sorority house. Builders plan to tear it down and put up more housing for students.Alpha Delta Chi sorority sister Madison Zeber walked us through the halls of the sorority house near campus, where 15 women live. The walls are covered with old, handwritten messages of faith. On the outside of the house, there’s a new message. A notice was recently posted by the City of San Diego, of plans to close the only Christian sorority. A private party plans to replace it with 42 units of new housing, intended for students. A neighboring single-family home and fraternity house will also be lost. “It would definitely be heart-breaking,” says sorority sister Carissa Thompson. She was a transfer student and has been living in the house for a year. “Coming here, I definitely wanted to make sure that I had a good, Christian community and I definitely found that here.”The SDSU Research Foundation owns and leases the houses, and tells 10News that the development plans were announced last fall. The sisters won't have to vacate the sorority house until 2020, when their lease is up. “We're trying to fight for this and take it one step at a time,” says the sorority president Alexis Kojo.It’s just one of a series of housing concerns for SDSU students. By this fall, all current, non-local sophomore students must live on-campus. It's called the Sophomore Success Program. Some students say it’s a costly requirement for those of little means, but the school's website reads, “Data show that students who live on campus are better prepared academically, enjoy an increased sense of community and campus connectedness, and graduate at faster rates than those who do not.”Alpha Delta Chi’s lot will not be used for Sophomore Success Program, but that doesn't change much for these sisters. No matter what, they'll have to start packing. “Our way of connecting to the school would be gone. Our sense of identity as Christians on this campus [and] SDSU students would be kind of taken away,” adds Kojo.The sorority says there are public meetings to discuss the redevelopment plans. The sisters say the meetings will take place April 3 and April 10 at the nearby Faith Presbyterian Church. 2278

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm is bringing tech companies together this week to showcase innovations in technology at its Smart Cities event. Zee Munir is in San Diego to display a giant touchscreen system. It puts everything teachers need for lessons at their fingertips. Teachers can record lessons and even have an extra set of eyes. “The cameras would show whether the student is paying attention or not dozing off or not,” Munir said. The first-of-its-kind event is designed to make it easier for governments to identify and use the smart innovations, which include parking meters, license plates, and even vacuums. Snajeet Pandit of Qualcomm said San Diego is where much of the smart tech begins. “San Diego compared to other cities adopted tech much faster rather than waiting and watching so they are at the cutting edge of deploying tech,” Pandit said. 882
