SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Summer is almost here, meaning a slew of wild, new entertainment at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Summer Safari returns to the Safari Park from May 25 to Sept. 1, bringing live music, arts and crafts, pop-up entertainment, up-close animal experiences, and more fun activities for families to enjoy.For the first time, the park will also host "family nights" on days the park is open until 8 p.m. On these nights, Monday and Tuesday from June 10 to July 30, special entertainment is planned, including bubble shows and evening cheetah runs.While Summer Safari is the big draw, guests will also be able to check out the park's new Walkabout Australia exhibit. Guests can wander through the Land Down Under in San Diego, across nearly four acres showcasing Australia's habitats and wildlife, including cassowaries, tree kangaroos, shelducks, and more. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Students, friends, and family are mourning the sudden death of a beloved East County teacher.John Berray, a longtime and well-known math teacher in Grossmont Union High School District, was seriously injured when he was leaving for work on Jan. 29.For an unknown reason, he got out of his car without it being placed in "park" and became pinned between his vehicle and his wife's vehicle, the county Medical Examiner said. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for an anoxic brain injury before he was pronounced dead on Feb. 12.According to a statement from Grossmont Union High School District, Berray worked at the district office as a digital learning coach. He most recently served as the district's math curriculum specialist where his passion for math led to innovations being used district wide.By all accounts, Berray was not only an exceptional educator but a husband, father, and friend.His career started in 1995 at West Hills High. He was selected by his students as the Golden Apple Award winner in 2000 and once again in 2008. His peers named him the West Hill High School teacher of the year in 2014. He went on to be named one of five 2014-15 San Diego County Teachers of the Year.After his passing, social media was filled with people living their thoughts and memories of Berray and his impact.Students, colleagues, and family will honor Berray with a memorial planned on March 14, Pi Day, at Journey Community Church in La Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video shows burglars ransacking a Pacific Beach brewpub hit hard by the pandemic.Just past 6 p.m Thursday, while food and craft beer were being served up at the second-story Amplified Ale Works restaurant, a masked man was recorded while inside the first-floor office and shuttered music venue.A mangled door revealed the intruder's entry point."Looks like he used a crowbar on the back door," said owner Alex Pierson.Inside, he's seen rummaging through drawers, grabbing headphones and some other items before leaving. Pierson says the burglar returned hours later, and he wasn't alone."When they came back at 10:30 p.m., they ransacked everything," said Pierson.For some 40 minutes, three men are seen helping themselves to whatever they wanted, filling up box after box.In one clip, one of the thieves is seen sorting through paperwork. Several blank checks were found missing."It's that feeling of violation. It hurt. Also took several employees' bikes, several guitars, amps, eight cases of beer, merchandise and some other electronics," said Pierson.For Pierson, the burglary is beyond disheartening."We're doing everything we can to keep our employees employed ... a 'being kicked while you're down' feeling," said Pierson.Pierson says the impact of the pandemic has cut revenues for the eight-year-old brewpub in half. The loss from the theft is more than ,000."In the end, it's not going to break us, but we're at such a point of breaking, as it is," said Pierson.Pierson fears others have also felt the hurt.
