CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida family says they were recently targeted by a terrifying kidnapping scam.Katie and Steve Watson live in Coral Springs, Florida and want to warn families about the crime.Katie tells WPTV that she received a call on Monday from a number she didn’t recognize. On the line she heard a whimpering child, then a mysterious man say he had kidnapped Katie’s daughter, Chloe."All of a sudden a man's voice came on the line, and he said, 'Katie I have your daughter. She's in the back of my van,' " Watson told WPTV on Tuesday.Katie said she quickly hung up, feeling in her gut that it was scam. "That's really part of what gave me the chills was somebody calling me by my name," said Watson. "That was unsettling."Katie says she figured it was a scam, but then got a bad feeling when she checked her daughter’s location through her phone's GPS.It initially said her daughter was at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, which Chloe attends. But then the GPS suddenly jumped to another location in Parkland.Upon further investigation, the Watsons found that her daughter was indeed at school, and more importantly, safe."I got chills all over my body and I was like, OK, I know that was a scam but that's like every parent's worst nightmare is to hear your kid has been kidnapped," said Watson.The FBI calls this a virtual kidnapping scam and says it’s evolved over the years and become more sophisticated.In the calls, a crook says he’s kidnapped your loved one and demands money in exchange for their safe return.In the Watsons' case, however, the scam was taken to a frightening new level with the use of a whimpering child on the line.The FBI offers these tips so you don’t become a victim: 1748

CYPRESS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was tackled in the middle of a Southern California Target store for reportedly taking pictures up women's skirts.According to Cypress Police, officers were notified that the man, later identified as Jorge Ibarra, 29, was taking pictures targeting women wearing skirts.The suspect then fled from the scene after being tackled to the ground by one of the women’s father. CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed and decapitated his wife.Police arrested Michael Parks of Crawfordsville on Friday after investigators found his wife's body and severed head, according to court documents filed Monday.On Aug. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a report of a deceased woman, identified as Hope Parks, whose headless body was found on County Road 225 on the Sugar Creek Bridge.Michael Parks told Crawfordsville police his wife had been missing since Aug. 18 following an argument. He said the last time he saw her was when she left their house and got into a silver or white Honda that was driven by an unknown person.During a search of the couple's house, police found dried blood in the gravel driveway in front of an overhead garage door, on the garage floor with a shoe print and on an exterior deck. Officers also discovered a trail of dried blood in the grass.Later in the day, investigators found a human head with a bullet wound buried in the cellar of the house.Police also found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, which matched a spent .22 caliber cartridge casing that was found in the yard next to a trail of blood. A phone believed to have belonged to Hope Parks was found in a safe in the home's bedroom. Investigators also found a man's shoe with tread similar to the footprint in the blood droppings in the garage.The next day, investigators discovered a blue tarp that was stained with blood, along with hair and plastic bags containing blood-covered rags that were found in the hole where the severed head was buried.An initial hearing for Michael Parks was held Tuesday. CITY HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman in City Heights said she discovered a power cord connected to her building’s utility box, leading into nearby Swan Canyon.After pulling it up, she said it was connected to a power strip and phone charger. She suspects it was being used by homeless people who live in the canyon.The woman did not want to be identified, saying the transients in the area have been aggressive at defending their campsites. She’s worried about the safety of her and her young children, who often like to walk on the trails.She believes the cord wasn’t there for more than a day, though she claims neighbors have also sighted people using the outlet to charge phones.She said she’s worried less about her electricity bill than the potential for the haphazard wiring to spark fires in the dry open space.Her husband, who works for the property manager, put a new lock on the utility closet though she suspects it won’t last long. It’s been ripped open before.She said they’ve reached out to SDG&E and have reported the issues to the city on the “Get it done” app.  1097

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— A local family is troubled by the way their child's school handled a situation last week after their 12-year-old son waved a toy gun at his web camera during e-learning. The school suspended the boy but and also sent a sheriff's deputy to the house to investigate.The incident happened last Thursday during an art class at Grand Mountain School, a K-8 school in Widefield School District 3. Danielle Elliott received an email from the teacher, saying that her son, Isaiah, had trouble paying attention during the lesson and was waving around what appeared to be a toy gun.Elliott reassured the teacher that the gun was just a toy, but then she learned that the school resource officer was being brought in."She told me she had to contact the principal because of it," Elliott said. "The next thing you know, the principal is calling me to notify me that the cops had been called and they were on their way to our house."Elliott provided a photo of the Umarex "Zombie Hunter" airsoft BB gun her son had held during class. The gun has a green barrel with an orange disc at the nozzle's end, which indicates it is a toy.Deputy Steven Paddack of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the school resource officer at Grand Mountain. He wrote in his report that the teacher, Danielle Selke, had told the vice principal that she "assumed it was a toy gun but was not certain."Paddack then watched a video recording from the virtual class in which Isaiah and another unidentified student were shown."The video clearly shows the boys playing around and (NAME REDACTED) pointing what appears to be a black handgun at the screen and pulling the trigger," Paddack wrote.Paddack then went to the homes of both students. He met with Isaiah and his father. Elliott was at work at the time but said she was worried sick about the encounter.Isaiah is African-American and the same age as Tamir Rice — the boy who was fatally shot by police officers in Cleveland in 2014 while holding a toy gun. She couldn't get the similarities to her own child out of her mind."Especially with the current events, with Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy getting killed over a toy gun, you know these things are very scary, and they're very real," she said. "This is not the first time my son has faced racism or discrimination or anything like that."Elliott explained that the school requires students to keep their web cameras turned on during virtual learning for attendance purposes. She was surprised to learn that the web camera sessions are recorded. She doesn't remember giving consent to the district to record the class.Isaiah and the other student were not charged in the incident. Paddack wrote that he explained the seriousness of the situation to the students and informed them that they could be charged with Interference with an Educational Institution.Elliott said the ordeal was traumatizing for Isaiah. She's since removed him from the school and is looking to enroll elsewhere."If the school was so concerned with my son's safety, why not just call me first," she said. "If they were so concerned with his safety, why call the police and give them this preconceived notion that my son is some sort of trouble maker?"Samantha Briggs, the communications director for Widefield District 3, said in a statement that privacy laws prevent administrators from sharing personal information of students, which includes disciplinary action."I can tell you that we follow all school board policies, whether we are in-person learning or distance learning. Safety will always be number one for our students and staff," Briggs said.
