SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A grandfather accused in the fatal fall of his young granddaughter from an 11th-story window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico last year has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Indiana, earlier said he would drop a not-guilty plea to help end what he called “this nightmare" for his family.Chloe Wiegand, an 18-month-old, slipped from Anello’s grasp and fell about 150 feet from an open window of Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Freedom of the Seas ship in July 2019.Anello, 51, has repeatedly said he is colorblind and did not know the window in the children's play area was open when he lifted Chloe up so she could bang on the glass, WRTV reports.Chloe's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises in December 2019, claiming the company violated industry standards by failing to provide reasonably safe windows in an area where children play on the ship.In response, Royal Caribbean filed court documents alleging that Anello was “unquestionably aware” that the window was open because video shows him leaning out of it right before he picked Chloe up and dangled her from it.The documents filed by Royal Caribbean claim Anello's actions were captured on two separate video surveillance cameras, which were previously unreleased. (CNS) - Southwestern College holds a memorial event at its Higher Education Center in San Ysidro on Thursday to mark the 35th anniversary of the McDonald's shooting that left 21 dead and 19 others injured.The event featured a community resource fair, a memorial ceremony and a student artwork display at the college's Higher Education Center, which is located at the former site of the McDonald's restaurant. The center also has a memorial with 21 hexagonal pillars representing each of the shooting's victims."It opens up the wounds. You never learn to get over it," says Guillermo Flores, who lost his brother in the shooting. His younger brother David was 11 years old at the time. "You just learn how to live with that pain."The shooting is the seventh-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and was the deadliest mass shooting ever committed in the U.S. at the time. (AP) — The Mercury News reports that California’s largest utility company said its equipment might have caused a fatal wildfire last month in Northern California.Investigators for the state have seized some of Pacific Gas & Electric’s gear in connection with the blaze, known as the Zogg fire, the company told state regulators. The blaze broke out Sept. 27 near the Shasta County town of Igo. The Shasta County wildfire began in the vicinity of Zogg Mine Road and Jenny Bird Lane. (AP) -- A surfer was found dead face down in the water at Upper Trestles at San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.The Orange County Register reports South Sector Superintendent for State Parks Rich Haydon says the man, described as middle age, was seen struggling Saturday as he paddled out into the surf at the break just south of San Clemente's border.It's unclear if the man was struggling because of the surf conditions or because of health issues.Nearby surfers then noticed the man face down in the water.Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded and continued attempting CPR before declaring the man dead at the scene.The San Diego County Medical Examiner had not released the man's name as of Monday morning. 746
