JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul man is cleaning up and unsure about how to start over, two weeks after the Valley Fire destroyed his home."Numb is a good word. I've cried, too," said Chuck Stevens, 62.The numbness started on Sept. 5. As the Valley fire approached his home on Northwood Drive early in the evening, Stevens, who was driving home from a baby shower, was turned away by authorities, miles from his home."I saw major flames a quarter-mile from my house ... felt helpless, just helpless," said Stevens.He returned two days later and saw the devastation. His double-wide trailer, his home for the last 15 years, was gone, and so was his truck, car, and two motorhomes."Devastation, everything burned to the ground,' said Stevens.His vehicles were only insured for liability. He didn't have wildfire insurance for his home."They would not give it to me because of the age of the mobile home," said Stevens.Stevens says his most painful loss is the hundreds of photos of his late love, his girlfriend Marilyn Norman, who died of a heart attack two years ago. They were together for more than a decade."Just devastated. I can never look at these photos again ... After years go by, you lose some memories if you don't look at the photos. That's what I really miss," said Stevens.Sadly, family members say they have yet to find any photos of the couple anywhere. Stevens says he'll hold fast to the memories, as he figures out how to move forward."I'm no spring chicken, but I'm starring over," said Stevens.Stevens says a friend has purchased a travel trailer, and he'll be living in it on the property for the time being.A GoFundMe campaign has been set to help Stevens purchase a new trailer home.ABC 10News San Diego is partnering up with sister ABC stations across California to help those families in need. KANSAS CITY, Mo. –- For two parents, welcoming three bundles of joy into the world last week was a one-in-a-million feeling. Statistically speaking, that’s not too far off. Identical triplets were born at Truman Medical Center Thursday to Nicole and Caleb Choge. Baby boys Ron, Elkanah, and Abishai were born just minutes apart and six weeks premature. By Sunday, the brothers were doing well under observation in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. According to doctors, it’s not uncommon for multiple births to come prematurely. What is uncommon is identical triplets. According to a study in the Journal of Biosocial Science, identical triplets occur only about 20 to 30 times per 1 million births. While the boys’ mother rested, new father Caleb Choge spoke with reporters Sunday. The couple, who have a 2-year-old son, was expecting another baby but were surprised when they saw the sonogram. “My wife and I and our son prayed for another child,” he said. “And then, I like to say, God answered everybody’s prayer: one, two and three.”Until recently, the couple lived in Kenya, Caleb Choge’s home country. They moved back to the Kansas City area to be closer to Nicole Choge’s family.   1253

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 10-year-old German Shepherd named Irgo should be settling into his new home in Kansas but instead he's overseas. Irgo's odyssey began Monday when his owner, Kara Swindle, dropped him off at the airport in Portland, Oregon ahead of the family's move to Wichita. Swindle said Irgo flew United Airlines to Denver where he spent the night. The next day Irgo was scheduled to land at Kansas City International Airport to be reunited with his family at United Airlines' Cargo facility."They took us back to the warehouse, they showed me the kennel, and the minute I said 'Irgo', out pops this Great Dane," Swindle said. "So I instantly burst into tears just wondering where my dog was. I was confused, upset and just in utter shock that this was not my dog."According to Swindle, it took several hours for United to figure out where Irgo was. The Great Dane provided a clue."His paperwork on his food said Japan so at that point they realized that's probably what happened and it got switched up somehow," Swindle said.Swindle received a call from United Airlines early Wednesday morning, that Irgo was, in fact, in Japan.Swindle said United Airlines told her that they're investigating how this happened, but they have offered her a theory."One thing they're thinking right now is that somehow at the pet resort in the Denver airport, when they got taken out of their kennels, to go potty — or whatever they do — they somehow got switched," Swindle said.United Airlines is working with Irgo's family to get him back home. Swindle said Wednesday evening, United has told her they plan to send Irgo on a flight that will land Thursday night in Wichita."They've been sending us updates like crazy. We've been so adamant that they send us pictures every hour letting us know how he is because I don't want anything happening. (AP) — The X Prize Foundation is developing a contest for technology that can detect and extinguish wildfires before they grow too large.X Prize Foundation chairman Peter Diamandis made the announcement Friday at the Near Future Summit in La Jolla, California. Diamandis says it will take about 100 days to develop the rules for the contest. After that, the foundation will try to find a sponsor and launch the competition.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom joined Diamandis on stage for the announcement. California has experienced its deadliest and most destructive wildfires in history in the past two years.Newsom has solicited proposals from academics, private companies and entrepreneurs for innovative ways to address California's wildfire problem. The state hopes to test products in the field this upcoming fire season.If a group comes up with an idea worthy of addressing the state's wildfire problems, they could receive anywhere from million to million in prize money. 1006
