Consumers are already spending big this holiday season, particularly online.With Black Friday right around the corner and the COVID-19 pandemic keeping shoppers online, consumers spent nearly billion while online shopping between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10, according to Check Point Security Software.But along with that increase in online shopping, Check Point also says it has seen a massive uptick in scammers looking to take advantage.In the last month alone, the company says malicious shopping emails have jumped from 1 in every 11,000 to one in every 1,000."They're using some of those again less sensational but very frequent terms like 'cheap' and 'sale' and 'percentage off' and 'special offers' to attract folks to click on some of these unsolicited emails," Mark Ostrowski of Check Point Software said.Scammers are using convincing lookalike emails to conduct phishing campaigns in the U.S. and abroad. One malicious email mimicked an ad for a Pandora jewelry that looked legitimate — outside of a misspelling of "Pandora."Ostrowski says shoppers should pay attention to grammar and spelling mistakes in marketing emails — they could be a red flag for scams. He also recommends mousing over hyperlinks before clicking on them to double-check where they're sending you.Ostrowski also says to be aware of seemingly legitimate emails that request personal information or passwords."I can't tell you how many times that I get an email — every single week — about how I need a password to be reset that I never asked to be reset," he said. "The one I've been getting the most lately is open enrollment. I get an email for open enrollment for healthcare every week, and I know that we're not doing that for at least another month."The Better Business Bureau also says it has seen a rise in online shopping scams, and more than 80% of those who fall victim to them lose money. Many of those scams aren't arriving as emails but are coming up in Google searches and social media posts. The BBB recommends taking time to research a website before deciding to make a purchase.Finally, experts recommend setting strong passwords for online accounts. Nordpass reports that hackers can easily steal information from accounts protected by easy-to-guess passwords, like 123456. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A 2-year-old boy who was found early Sunday morning following a statewide search prompted by an Amber Alert has died, a family member has confirmed.Nain Dominguez, 2, was found at around 7:18 a.m. and was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to an official with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. He was later pronounced dead despite medical intervention, the sheriff's office said in a statement. Details about where the boy was found, or how he sustained those injuries, were not immediately provided by investigators. Biridiana Dominguez, the boy's sister, said the boy "brought a lot of joy to our family." She went on to thank the community and police for their help in finding her little brother. Boy's disappearance prompts statewide searchThe search for Dominguez began at around 5:41 p.m., when deputies received a report that the boy was last seen with an older sibling near Stratmoor Hill Trailhead Park.It would take nearly four hours for Coloradans across the state to be alerted that the toddler was missing via an Amber Alert that was sent out just before 9:30 p.m.Initially, El Paso County deputies reported the boy was last seen being carried by a suspect into a large, white panel van with now windows in the back in the area near 1215 Fountain Road in Colorado Springs.But just after midnight Sunday, both El Paso County deputies and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said they no longer believed the van and suspect information initially provided were related to the toddler’s disappearance. 1656
Cliff Robinson, a former UConn star and longtime top sixth man in the NBA, has died. His death was confirmed by UConn. No cause of death was given, though former Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said Robinson had a stroke 2 1/2 years ago. Nicknamed Uncle Cliffy, Robinson played 18 seasons in the NBA and helped the Portland Trail Blazers reach two NBA Finals. Before that, he was the centerpiece of Calhoun’s early teams at UConn. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Border Patrol agents detained an Ohio woman for eight hours and falsely accused her of human smuggling. The woman said she and her husband were leaving a funeral in California when agents stopped them at a checkpoint.For nearly 40 hours, Reina and her husband made the 2,000-mile drive from their home in Columbus, Ohio to Calexico, California. The couple was taking in the scenic views state-by-state, "Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma until we got to California," recalled Reina.The two were attending a funeral in the border city for a family friend. However, the quick trip would turn into a frightful and long ordeal, Reina said. She would eventually be left stranded in the California desert."I said 'I'm in trouble, I have to find my way home,' " said Reina.Her troubles all began on their way home. Reina and her husband were driving up Highway 86 when they came across a toll-like booth under a white canopy. It was a Border Patrol checkpoint near the Salton Sea."I don't know if it's because we have out-of-state tags or because of what we look like, but he asked us what is our citizenship," Reina recounted. "I answered, then they asked my husband."Reina, an American of Puerto Rican descent, handed agents her passport, but it wasn't so simple for her husband. He is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, and without the proper papers, agents detained Reina's husband and then shifted their attention to her."And he said 'Take off your jewelry.' I said 'Why?' He said, 'Cause you are being arrested.' I said, 'For what?' he said 'For smuggling,' " said Reina.Agents were accusing her of traveling to the border to smuggle her husband into the United States."He said 'You came here and picked up your husband, didn't you?' " recalled Reina.Reina said she insisted she had proof the two traveled together. She had hotel and gas receipts detailing their journey. But agents booked and fingerprinted Reina and placed her in a locked holding cell."It is freezing like an icebox in there," she said. "The benches are aluminum. The toilet is stainless steel, and there is a camera in the corner watching you."Minutes turned to hours before Reina said she was taken in for another round of questioning."He said, 'Oh I didn't know you were still here; they forgot about you,' " said Reina. The U.S. Attorney's office decided against charging Reina with smuggling. Only then was she free to go, after sitting in that cell for eight hours."I felt violated. I felt betrayed because I was an American and I have my own rights," said Reina.She was then left to find her own way home since Border Patrol agents confiscated the couple's rental car. Reina said agents dropped her off at a truck stop a few minutes up the road close to midnight.She said a manager there drove her an hour to the nearest airport. That is where she booked a 9 plane ticket home.WEWS reached out to the United States Border Patrol. They said agents followed the protocol for when someone is suspected of "alien smuggling." They also say when a person is released, it is up to them to get a ride or agents will take them to a nearby public place. 3227
COVID-19 has boosted a number of essential and online businesses to the point where they need to hire hundreds of people. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area.
