LEAWOOD, Kan. - Walking down the streets, grocery stores, and airports, face coverings are the current reality.For his bar mitzvah project, Leawood Middle School seventh-grader, Jonah Stein, wanted to add a little more to masks."These are MaskerAIDS, they're basically necklaces for your masks," Jonah said. "It's when you're not wearing them, they kind of just hanging down so they're not in the way. But they're also functional when you need them."As he sells his MaskerAIDS, Jonah says all the proceeds benefit Jewish Family Services."At the start of the pandemic, you could just see lines of people trying to get food, just waiting for food to be put in their cars," he said.Jonah, who volunteers at Jewish Family Services, says he wanted to help families in need who are food insecure and going through a difficult time."Jonah is just such a great example of one person making a huge impact," JFS older adult services director, Laura Gilman said.From produce to toiletries and protein, Gilman said she's seen the need grow."We at least doubled during COVID. We're serving over 500 families a month," she said. "And then by the end of this year, we're going to serve about, between October, November, December, about 1,500 households, so that's not individuals, that's households."The MaskerAID proceeds go towards the Kesher KC Bags, which Jonah also helped bring to Kansas City."Someone we know in Minnesota, it was at their synagogue, and I kind of told JFS about it, and they used the idea and went with it," Jonah said. "They are bags that have essentials of, like, heat up meals and food and then they also have some resources.""These bags are a really awesome way for us to create a stopgap for people," Gilman said. "We operate by appointment only because we are a choice and voice pantry."Jonah's goal was to raise ,800 for JFS, but he underestimated himself and his work."It's been amazing," he said. "We've raised ,600 dollars and still climbing for JFS."Thousands of dollars have been raised to help serve families he may never meet."Even though I might not meet them, I know it kind of either brings a smile to their face and it fills their stomach," Jonah said. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV)-- Hundreds of strangers came together Sunday morning to clean up the aftermath of Saturday night's La Mesa riots.There is a sense of love and support Sunday morning in downtown La Mesa. Strangers worked collaboratively to reverse the effects of what transpired Saturday. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned into a violent protest. By early afternoon, people were blocking Interstate 8 and taking out their frustrations on SWAT Bearcat vehicles.The pandemonium continued into the night. Police deployed tear gas, protesters set cars and local shops on fire. Looters took advantage of the chaos."[It was] just a crazy scene," La Mesa property owner Tony Gaipa said. He said he was one of the lucky ones. "If you're in front of your building, they kind of left you alone, but the building next door didn't have anybody, and they would just pop the glass," Gaipa said. 10News met John Douglas as he was cleaning up in front of his wife's workplace-- an engineering firm that is now burned to the ground. "I saw signs last night like 'Racism Sucks' and 'Black Lives Matter.' Well, what about the black lives that got affected by this?"As an African American man, he understands people wanting justice, after seeing so much of the opposite. But he says what happened Saturday is not the answer."We can't do stuff like this. This is not helping. It's just wrong," Douglas said. He and hundreds of others spent hours sweeping the asphalt, painting over the graffiti, and drilling over broken walls to repair their beloved downtown. "I've heard nothing but positive things from everyone today," Douglas said. "Couple of bad comments from people driving by, but that's one bad seed. If that doesn't spread, there is no cancer. (KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229
