SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — TwitchCon has announced it will cancel this year's convention in San Diego originally scheduled in September.The convention — which brings together popular video streamers and the community for panels, parties, and more — was set to arrive in San Diego from Sept. 25-27 before organizers called off the event."Due to restrictions on large gatherings and ongoing concerns for the health and safety of our community, the Twitch team and the local San Diego community, we have decided to cancel TwitchCon San Diego this fall," organizers stated online. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wednesday, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot reported that 26 additional Marine Corps Recruits had been sickened by E. coli.Currently 214 recruits among the more than 5500 recruits in training at both MCRD and the command’s field training facilities at Camp Pendleton are symptomatic of E. coli.The total number dropped from a reported 302 Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two girls were rescued at Sunset Cliffs by teenage bystanders on Friday after being swept out to sea.Local still photographer Jim Grant was hoping to capture the sunset at Sunset Cliffs Friday evening. But he got much more than just a beauty shot."There were some crazy things going on," Grant said.He ended up witnessing a cliff and water rescue."Two young girls ... They looked to be about 12 or 13," Grant said. "They were down at this point, and a large set came in and swept them off their feet.""The older one hit her head probably down on the reef and had a pretty serious head injury in the water," Lt. Andy Lerum with the San Diego Lifeguards said.Before first responders could arrive on the scene, two boys jumped into the water to help the girls. The two teenage boys worked to keep the girls above water until help arrived, lifeguards said, adding that their efforts were instrumental in saving their lives."It was big surf," Grant remembered. "The girls could not swim or couldn't swim very well, that's for sure. And it just could've been a tragic event if those two guys didn't happen to be here."Grant captured dramatic photos of the rescue, showing responders hoist one of the girls from the cliffs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Uber recently released a safety report highlighting the number of sexual assaults reported by passengers between 2017 and 2018.In the two years, nearly 6,000 people reported being sexually assaulted. Of those, 464 reported being raped.“When you get in the car you should be able to feel safe, like nothing is going to happen to you,” said attorney Mike Bomberger. That feeling of security is quickly evaporating in an age where it is completely normal to jump into a car with a stranger.RELATED: Uber safety report reveals nearly 6,000 reports of sexual assaultBomberger’s firm, Estey & Bomberger, represents more than 100 women in approximately 40 states who reported being sexually assaulted in Uber and Lyft rides.Three of the women reported incidents that happened in San Diego.“Each situation here in San Diego is different,” he said. “The one common theme is that a driver, a predator, took advantage of a vulnerable female in the backseat of a vehicle.”He said in most of the cases he represents, the women are intoxicated and trying to get home safely.“You're getting into a car with someone you know nothing about,” he said. “Every single woman that we represent that has been assaulted has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.”RELATED: Uber, Lyft riders report being charged for cleanup fees for messes they didn't makeAccording to the report, more than three million Uber trips were taken daily in 2017 and 2018.Bomberger said a key part of the solution, is to install cameras or other recording devices in every Uber and Lyft driver's vehicle."What’s the likelihood of a driver who knows there’s a camera in the car to sexually assault or rape somebody in the car?" he asked. "It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize the changes of that happening are going to be exponentially lower."Uber has already started doing this in some states."I hope their intent is to roll that out in other states as well because that is the single biggest way they’re going to prevent women from being harmed and assaulted," said Bomberger.
