SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was sentenced to nearly a decade in state prison Wednesday for his role in the fatal shooting of a Navy sailor who pulled over on a San Diego freeway ramp to help a seemingly stranded motorist.Harvey Liberato, 26, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges stemming from the Oct. 27, 2018 slaying of 21-year-old Curtis Adams on the connector ramp between southbound state Route 15 and northbound Interstate 5.Adams was driving on the freeway with his girlfriend at around 2 a.m. when he stopped to assist a disabled vehicle on the side of the freeway, which was actually a car that had sustained flat tires in a shootout from a bungled vehicle burglary earlier that night.RELATED: Man found guilty of murder in slaying of Navy sailor on freewayThe disabled car was occupied by Liberato, Susana Galvan, 40; Brandon Acuna, 23; and Brandon's brother, Edson Acuna, 26.Believing Adams was the person they had engaged in a shootout with earlier in the night, Edson Acuna exited the car and shot Adams in the chest.Edson was convicted by a jury earlier this year of first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, various firearm counts and a special-circumstance allegation of committing the murder in the commission of a burglary. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in a series of residential burglaries and auto thefts in El Cajon was arrested Thursday.Davon Lee, 20, was driving a vehicle stolen during one of the home- invasion thefts when San Diego police took him into custody Thursday afternoon, El Cajon police Lt. Kevin MacArthur said.Lee, an El Cajon resident, is suspected of committing seven burglaries in the East County city in recent weeks.In each case, the intruder entered an occupied home through an open door or window, located car keys inside and then stole a vehicle from the premises, MacArthur said. 591

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. The gunshot victim underwent surgery, but an update on his status was not immediately available.A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. 1061

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence. Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. The path to a seventh term appears more fraught for Hunter, whose trial is slated to begin Sept. 10 in federal court. With rumors of a possible resignation swirling, a cluster of Republican politicians have announced plans to run for the seat in the event Hunter foregoes a run or cannot legally run in 2020. El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn, former Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and former U.S. Navy SEAL Larry Wilske have all joined the race as Republicans. Former Rep. Darrell Issa, who declined a re-election run in the 49th District in 2018, could also join the race. Campa-Najjar, meanwhile, essentially never stopped campaigning after losing last year and is likely to have a war chest prepared for another attempt to flip the seat. ``More than half a dozen Republicans are now eyeing a challenge against me for CA-50,'' the Campa-Najjar campaign said in a statement last Friday. ``This is an internal battle that party elites will have to figure out amongst themselves.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage Oceanside resident was arrested Thursday on suspicion of gunning down another young man last week near Vista Transit Center.Homicide detectives arrested 19-year-old Issac Martinez on Tuesday in connection with the death of Jonathan Ruiz, 20, according to sheriff's officials. Martinez was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail.Deputies responding to reports of gunfire shortly before 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 found Ruiz gravely wounded on a dirt path off the 200 block of Olive Avenue in Vista, Lt. Michael Blevins said. Medics took the Vista resident to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.Witnesses described seeing two teenage boys or young men running away from the transit center following the shooting, Blevins said.Officials have not revealed a possible motive in the case or disclosed what led investigators to identify Martinez as a suspect in the slaying.  983
