While most people seek safety during danger, Ebonique Johnson actually hurries to the frontlines.“I’m running towards it because that’s where I’m needed the most,” said Johnson, a nursing student at Georgia State University in Atlanta.Set to graduate in December, she’s looking to land a job at an ICU.“I want to be where I’m needed,” Johnson said. “I want to help the COVID patients.”That help could come sooner or later depending on where she gets a job.Some states are waiving certain regulations and allowing nursing students to enter the workforce more easily. Other states, however, have prevented nursing students from working with COVID-19 patients altogether.“We can’t hit the pause button with what’s going on, nurses are needed now more than ever,” said Dr. Regena Spratling, associate dean for GSU’s school of nursing.She says coronavirus concerns have limited student access to hospitals for hands-on clinical training and that more courses are now being taught online.“We’re really focusing on what they would be doing within the health care system as far as taking care of patients,” Spratling said. Despite changes, GSU is seeing more people looking to join its nursing program.For GSU nursing student Phillip Parnell, this pandemic is personal.“One of my older relatives recently passed away with the virus,” he said.The army veteran is now making his second career his first priority.“When it hits home, it’s a different level of intensity,” Parnell said.The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the health care industry needs more than 200,000 new nurses each year through 2026 just to replace retiring nurses.“Although we never thought we would see a pandemic in our lifetime, it’s here,” Johnson said.GSU students are happy to be leading the next generation of nurses while also fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines.“We answer the call to be there for people,” Johnson said. “It’s our time to show up.” 1925

(AP) — Friendly’s Restaurants, an East Coast dining chain known for its Fribble milkshake and ice cream sundaes, is filing for bankruptcy protection.All 130 of its locations will remain open while it restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Substantially all of its assets are being sold to the restaurant company, Amici Partners Group.“Over the last two years, Friendly’s has made important strides toward reinvigorating our beloved brand in the face of shifting demographics, increased competition, and rising costs,” said George Michel, the company's CEO. “We achieved this by delivering menu innovation, re-energizing marketing, focusing on take-out, catering and third-party delivery, establishing a better overall experience for customers, and working closely with our franchisees and restaurant teams. Unfortunately, like many restaurant businesses, our progress was suddenly interrupted by the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, which caused a decline in revenue as dine-in operations ceased for months and re-opened with limited capacity."The pandemic has hit the restaurant sector hard, particularly those that rely on people in their dining rooms.At least 10 chains have filed for bankruptcy protection since the pandemic began this year.But Friendly’s Restaurant, like most other chains that have stumbled this year, had been struggling. When it comes to voting in-person, Election Day in Tennessee went off without a hitch and some say election workers had much to do with that.Two of the many election workers who helped make it happen were a husband and wife who have worked the polls for more than 30 years.Tuesday was a busy day for Ira and Norma Hendon, voters got in line in Clarksville at 7 a.m.But the Hendon's work started even earlier at 5:30 a.m. And it lasted until about 8 p.m. as they and others made sure every voter who wanted to cast their ballot did so with no problems.Ira and Norma have been election workers for decades, starting in Stewart County and now Montgomery County."But when they ask you how long you've been there, it’s kind of embarrassing," said Norma.They say in the many years since they began working the polls in 1988, a lot has changed including the voting machines themselves."They were the huge machines that looked like photography things with curtains in the front."Ira is 88 years old and Norma is 86 years old and they say there's no slowing down, not even for COVID-19. They say they felt safe the entire time with their masks and gloves.From former President George H.W. Bush to President Donald Trump, this couple has never stopped helping a first-time or long-time voter on Election Day.And even during a pandemic, they say they were encouraged by the turnout this year's large turnout."It was so inspiring to see so many people who had medical and physical issues. With Congress unable to agree on another stimulus package, the CARES Act may have been the only chance for many to get an economic impact payment or stimulus check. However, millions of people still haven’t received that check.The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates roughly 9 million people are still owed at least ,200. The Center for Taxpayer Rights estimates another 2 to 3 million people are entitled to and have been fighting to get the 0 for each of their eligible dependents.“There is a whole combination of factors for why people have not received their checks,” said Nina Olsen, the Executive Director for The Center of Taxpayer Rights.One reason some have not gotten their checks is because they did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, and they have not gone to the IRS’s “Non-Filer Portal,” which is located on the home page of the IRS’s website.So now, after 5 months, the IRS is sending letters to 9 million people in that category. The IRS has been able to identify who still qualifies for a check, but hasn’t received it, by sorting through its records and checking W-2 forms and 1099s.Those forms also have the non-filer’s address information, and that is the address the IRS is using for the new letters. The letters will inform these non-filers they are still eligible to get a stimulus check under the CARES Act and the steps they need to take to get that money. The steps are simple, either go to the IRS’s website and fill out the non-filer form or file a tax return.“It is also really important that people realize that if they use the non-filer portal they won’t be able to claim the earned income credit and many of these people may be eligible for the earned income credit,” said Olsen. “Those people need to file a regular return rather than use the non-filer portal and I don’t think the IRS has done a really good job of telling people that.”The earned income tax credit (EITC), typically earned by those who have dependent children, can be worth up to ,000. If you fill out the non-filer form in the IRS’s portal but later learn you qualified for additional money from the EITC, you could potentially lose the money from EITC.Outside of the 9 million non-filers getting a letter from the IRS, the 2 to 3 million people still eligible for 0 per dependent are getting a second chance at more CARES Act stimulus money.“Social Security Retirees and disabled people, it gave them less than 48 hours to go online if they had children. That meant they could get an additional 0 and enter that on the non-filer portal. Well a lot of these folks don’t have online access,” said Olsen. "It actually took a lawsuit that is still in the process of being settled for the IRS to reopen the portal.”Those still eligible to claim dependents have until the end of September to claim them through the IRS’s non-filer portal. What started as a simple gesture of kindness during the lunch hour resulted in more than 900 cars “paying it forward” over the course of over two and a half days at a Minnesota Dairy Queen. Customers in the drive thru continued to pay for the order of the car behind them.According to the Brainerd, Minnesota, Dairy Queen, the chain started around lunch time on December 3. By the end of the first day, 280 cars participated by the close of business.December 4 started with paid forward from the night before, and it went from there. More than 500 cars in the drive thru paid it forward on December 4. The streak continued through December 5."It makes people feel good.
