SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County family is channeling their pain into helping domestic violence survivors in San Diego. The family's loved one, 19-year-old Kiera Bergman, was murdered last year in Arizona. ”What helps us is being able to help other people and we want her story and her memory to stay alive and that’s why we’re choosing to do donation drives, because we want to be able to help people that are in the same situation she was in," said Mindy Tarantino, Kiera's aunt. Investigators believe Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, is responsible for her death. Clark faces first-degree murder charges and is set to stand trial in a few months. “I'll look at pictures that I have of her and then all of a sudden you just get overwhelmed, I get anxiety really quick, and it just really hits me that she’s gone," said Kiera's grandmother, Sandie Bergman. They are collecting various toiletries and items like diapers to donate to Becky's House, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness.A donation drive was held in Santee on Monday, but you can also donate online through the family's Amazon Wish List. 1155

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Protesters dressed in salon gear took to the street outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home Thursday.In video of the protest, some demonstrators are seen with curlers in their hair, plastic is draped over them and hair dryers hang from trees.The rally came two days after video of Pelosi getting her hair cut inside a California salon surfaced.California Governor Gavin Newsom lifted restrictions on hair salons serving customers indoors at the end of last month. However, the city of San Francisco still requires such services to only be provided outside.Pelosi says the salon told her it would be OK to come inside, because they are only accommodating one person at a time.She also claims the whole thing was a set-up, since the video was released to the media by the salon's owner, KGO reports. SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Emergency crews have recovered a body after an incident at a Scottsdale aquatic park.Crews were at Eldorado Aquatic Park near Hayden and McDowell road early Monday morning.Scottsdale police say around 12:30 a.m.; an officer was making rounds in the area when he heard what sounded like muffled calls for help.He worked to locate where the calls may be coming from and eventually found them to be coming from a pipe that helps support one of the water slides.Officers were communicating with the victim, said to be a transient, but lost communication with him around 2 a.m.Officials say the man reportedly went up over a tall fence surrounding the park and was up on the slide. He then somehow fell into the pipe structure, where he became trapped.Crews had to dismantle the slide in order to get the victim's body out.He has since been identified as 31-year-old Ryan Kelly. SANTEE — A group of Santee residents trying to gather enough signatures to force a public vote on the recently approved Fanita Ranch development say they are facing intimidation from the developer.Meanwhile, the developer says the signature gatherers are the ones acting unethically.The Santee group, called Preserve Wild Santee, has until election day to gather signatures from 3,500 registered city voters to force the Santee City Council to either rescind approval of the development, or send it to a public vote.On Sept. 23, the council voted 4-1 to approve the project, which calls for roughly 3,000 new homes, 80,000 square-feet of retail space, a school, a farm and public trails. Proponents say the project would provide homes to help with the county's severe housing crisis, while opponents say it would create too much traffic and increase wildfire danger.The homes would start in the 0,000s and could be available as soon as mid-2022."We're for reasonable growth and in the right places and in the right locations, not in an extreme fire hazard location," said Santee resident Janet Garvin, one of the signature gatherers.Garvin said, however, that people who come to sign the forms are being heckled by a project supportes, funded by developer HomeFed. On Monday, Santee Councilman Stephen Houlahan, the lone no-vote on the project, confronted HomeFed's workers on camera at a strip mall."It seemed like a very, very strong coincidence that there was two women volunteering here, and they were surrounded by three men in a very intimidating posture," he said.Houlahan also said the HomeFed workers have also promised to follow signature gatherers across Santee to try to stop them from getting more supporters.But Jeff O'Connor, vice president of HomeFed, stood by the workers. He said they have been respectful, and are there to correct misinformation he says the signature gatherers about the project - namely about the improvements promised to Highway 52, and when it comes to tax increases. While there could be a Melo Roos fee on homeowners, O'Connor said there will be no tax increase on the general Santee population."They're being professional, they're getting the facts out, they're being courteous," he said.
