(KGTV) — Whale watchers off the coast of Dana Point were recently treated to the sighting of a lifetime.A rare gray orca calf was spotted swimming in a pod of whales by a pilot, before the message was relayed to Capt. Todd Mansur of Dana Wharf Whale Watching.Mansur said the sighting by itself was a rare occasion on its own."The feeling you get when you get to see, not only orcas, but then to see that baby and how it stood out so much," Mansur recalls. "I've been doing this for longer than most people have been alive. And I have had killer whale encounters in Southern California less than 10 times."The gray orca is one of two that have recently been documented by scientists. The other was seen off the coast of British Columbia."There were people on the boat that were crying. That's how excited they were," Mansur said.Mansur says there's no way to know what gives the rare orca its gray color. It could be a gene or a disease."Unless we actually collect a DNA sample from all of them and scientifically match things up," Mansur said. "But for the passengers on board, it was the spot of a lifetime." 1117

Laguna Campground: Mount Laguna has long been an area for camping and an escape from the city for San Diegans. While the Mount Laguna Observatory has the power to look deep into the galaxy, you'll have to bring your own gear at the campground to view the dark skies. Torrey Pines State Reserve: Torrey Pines State Reserve can provide some surprising star gazing despite being as close to highways as it is. The glider port has been a spot for those who don't want to make the hours-long trek east. Blue Sky Ecological Reserve: Poway's Blue Sky park is a great spot close to the county and away from too many bright lights for star gazing. Fleet Science Center (Balboa Park): Yes, Balboa Park is close to the city lights, but with some telescopic power, you can still catch some great sights like planets and bright stars. Mt. Helix Park: Mount Helix is another good option for those not wanting to drive too far away. Otay Lakes County Park: Otay Lakes park is another close option where local star gazers have had success staring into the night sky. Soledad Mountain: Another option close to home. Set your gaze or telescope in the right direction and Soledad Mountain is a great spot to star gaze. San Elijo Park: Head up to North County and catch some star-gazing at San Elijo Park. (KGTV)- UC San Diego Health has had a goal to increase testing since the start of this pandemic, according to Dr. David Pride, the Associate Director of Microbiology.Now, UCSD Health has started using a new testing strategy; pool testing.“We’ve really been thinking about what is it that we can do to sort of extend testing in the San Diego region,” said Pride. “Pooling is absolutely a strategy, for example, that employers can use on their employees that universities can use, for example, on their students.”As the nation faces another COVID-19 testing supply shortage, Pride said this could be one solution to conserving the current supply.“Pool testing works by taking a group of individuals and placing all of their specimens together,” he said.Instead of using one test per person, samples from several people are collected and tested together.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pool testing to be used only when the positive rate is low enough to justify pooling.“If that pool tests negative, then you can call each individual that was in that pool negative,” said Pride.If the pool tests positive, then each person is retested individually.“We test a lot of different patient populations, so we know what the prevalence of disease is in those patient populations, and we’ve chosen to use those with the lowest prevalence of disease for our pool testing,” Pride explained.He said they are currently using a five to one strategy, meaning five people per one test.“We’ve done probably somewhere around 500 to 600 so far. The majority of the batches have been negative, we’ve had less than 10 percent of the pools test positive,” Pride said, which is what his team expected.Pride said he heard positive feedback about pool testing from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“Just a few weeks ago, we submitted our emergency use authorization to the FDA, and we think we’re probably getting fairly close to that getting approved,” he said.Soon, pride expects to start doing more pool testing, while also speeding up the process.“Right now, we’re really working on it in a very manual fashion,” he said. “That takes a lot of time to do, so we’re in the process of automating it by bringing in machinery to do that work that people are doing right now.” 2287

A 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds in a shark attack Wednesday on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, according to officials and reports.The swimmer suffered bites to his leg and torso and was hospitalized, CNN affiliate WCVB reported. His condition was not immediately known.The incident occurred in Truro within the boundary of Cape Cod National Seashore, the National Park Service said.The man was standing about 30 yards offshore when he was bitten.WCVB reported there have been shark sightings in the area, with seals being attacked.Two children were attacked last month off Long Island, New York, and investigators were looking into whether sharks were responsible. 693
