MILLVILLE, N.J. -- It doesn’t take much to get Hansel going. His greatest asset is his nose, which comes in handy, as the first pit bull in the country to ever become a certified arson detection dog. “He's my boy 100 percent,” said arson investigator Tyler Van Leer of the Millville Fire Department in New Jersey and Hansel’s handler. “He's certified to detect 14 ignited a liquid odors, meaning anything that you could buy from a hardware store, that you can set a house on fire with, ignite the liquids, he's trained to sniff out.” Hansel’s path getting there wasn’t easy. The 4-year-old was rescued from an alleged dog fighting ring in Canada. Authorities there wanted to euthanize all of the dogs, but rescue groups stepped in. Arnold Kee has always pushed his two sons to do well in school. Then, an email he received from their high school last year alarmed him. It alerted parents about high levels of lead found in the water. “Fortunately, they've both done well, but it's the type of thing that makes you wonder would they have performed even better had they not been exposed to whatever lead was in the system,” Kee says. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even low levels of lead can cause behavior and learning problems, including lower IQ scores. The school replaced water fountains and installed filters at the school designed to reduce lead. “What I like is the idea of the school being proactive and trying to address it, but then also the city itself trying to address it, because I do think it takes more than the just the city to be on top of what's happening,” Kee says. Washington, D.C. law now requires filters to be put on water fountains at schools, daycares and even at parks. However, D.C.’s efforts are the exception. An alarming report by Environment America found most schools are not doing enough to protect students from drinking water contaminated with lead. “We see pervasive contamination of drinking water at schools and pre-schools across the country,” says John Rumpler, co-author of the report.The report looked at states across the country and found most received failing grades. Millions of children are being exposed to lead from contaminated pipes and drinking fountains. “If your kid’s school was built before 2014, chances are the pipes, the plumbing, the fountains, the faucets have significant amounts of lead in them and those faucets and fountains should be replaced and filters should be put on,” Rumpler says.Rumpler urges parents to pressure their schools and lawmakers to make those changes. He also any parents concerned about lead contamination should talk with their pediatrician. 1937

At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. It was not a quiet afternoon Monday at Madison Square Park.Brian Kemsley was walking with his girlfriend when he saw and heard a commotion on the Fifth Avenue side of Madison Square Park. He saw a man trying to rip away a stroller.“It's not a matter of stepping in it's a matter of duty, when you see a woman and her child screaming,” he said.He says the man was asked to let go of the stroller but kept reaching for the baby. The mother was also holding another toddler and everyone was screaming.Kemsley pinned him down and waited for police to arrive. It was captured by a witness on social media. Witnesses recorded video and called 911. Rangers arrived after about fifteen minutes and Kemsley says police took the man into custody. He was taken to a hospital and no one was hurt.
