Erin Eickhorst instills the values of Gompers Prep Academy. “I owe it all to my leadership,” says Eickhorst, crediting the school’s new director. “I look at them and they've inspired me from day one. They allowed me to grow this deep passion for not only our students, but for our community and without them I wouldnt be where I am now. I really do owe it all to them and my students.” 485

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A second Scripps Medical Response Team has deployed to Northern California, tasked with helping fire victims.The first team returned Friday after a nine-day mission.“Being there in these shelters with people that have lost totally everything, but they're thankful for their lives, it just sets a whole new meaning for us for Thanksgiving," said Steve Miller, a Registered Nurse and part of the response team.Miller says because fire victims were forced to evacuate so quickly many did not have their medications or ID's to pick up prescriptions. He says the smoke also made respiratory problems worse. The days are long for the medical team, 12 hours at the shelter providing medical care along with prep and a daily debrief. “You’re in austere conditions; you’re living in tents, it’s cold, it’s wet, you do not have electricity, so you have to be able to work in that environment. You don't have all the medical tools you have in the hospital.”The second four-person team will continue to help fire evacuees over the next week. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A verdict has been reached in the trial of a former Yuma Police officer accused of raping his then-wife's cousin in 2017.Jurors found 34-year-old Jared Elkins guilty of four felony counts, including forcible rape and sexual penetration by force. Elkins was found not guilty, however, on four similar counts involving an intoxicated victim."I'm extremely pleased with this jury and their verdicts," said Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox."The fact that he was a law enforcement officer and carried a weapon was significant for the victim in this case she believed that he would carry through with these threats and why she was so afraid of him," argued Fox.Elkins was taken into custody without bail following the reading of the verdict. Elkins claimed during testimony this month that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Following the encounter, the woman says she ran to her mother's room and both escaped out of a window. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sudden avalanche Friday buried five guests at a Northern California ski resort, including a San Diego native and his wife.Evan Huck and his wife, Kahlynn, were among the five skiers and boarders rescued after an avalanche buried a portion of Squaw Valley Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe. Huck grew up on Coronado, his parents told 10News, and had recently married Kahlynn.The pair escaped unscathed, though hectic moments caught on video after the incident show the drastic effort to make sure things didn't end worse.10News?live?weather conditionsKahlynn and others were captured afterward frantically digging Huck out of the mountain of snow, whose beard was the only part of him peeking through.  While Huck was reportedly knocked unconscious, he was able to snowboard down the mountain on his own afterward. It took about 5 minutes to dig him out.Two of the five caught in the sudden avalanche were injured, one with a serious lower-body injury, according to Placer County Sheriff's Department.
