County employees in southern California have been arrested for allegedly damaging a Black Lives Matter sign that was displayed on private property in the city of Thousand Oaks.The homeowner installed a surveillance camera and captured several instances of people damaging and trying to remove the sign, which is a tarp along a fence with the letters "BLM" on it. Authorities said they recognized one of the vandals after the homeowner posted surveillance video on social media, according to the LA Times. Three people so far have been arrested, including Darin Stone, a sheriff's office employee in a non-sworn-in position. He was allegedly seen slashing the sign in two separate incidents while off-duty.Stone received a misdemeanor citation and was placed on administrative leave.Craig Anderson, an investigative assistant in the Ventura County DA's office was cited for vandalism. COPPER CENTER, Alaska – A hunter was killed by a grizzly bear in a national park in Alaska.The National Park Service (NPS) says it happened Sunday at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the southeastern part of the state.According to NPS, the hunter was on a 10-day moose hunt with a friend when the bear attacked near the Chisana River drainage.Specific injuries in the attack have not been disclosed, but it appears nobody else was harmed during the incident.Officials say this is the first known bear mauling fatality recorded at the park since it was established in 1980.“Visitors are encouraged to be Bear Aware when traveling in the backcountry and take precautions such as carrying bear spray and using Bear Resistant Food Containers (BRFC),” wrote NPS in a statement. “The park also encourages hunters to read Bear Safety for Hunters located on the ADF&G website.”The identity of the deceased hunter is being withheld pending investigation, NPS says. 979

CINCINNATI -- While their fellow incoming college students enjoyed Freshman Welcome Week, Natalie Vasu and Kiley Hatfield spent much of their first week at the University of Cincinnati sitting inside at Turner Schneider Hall. Their new dorm room had a broken shower head, broken locks and a thermostat on the fritz, and at least one person needed to be around to greet the repair teams who came to fix them.Those issues were irritating but all had quick solutions, Vasu said. The mold they discovered near four outlets in the room didn't."There were water dripping stains down the outlet," Vasu said. "We're lucky when we went and plugged things in that nothing caught fire or went wrong."The university immediately removed the girls -- Vasu, Hatfield and their two roommates -- from their room and offered them new rooms. Separate ones. Hatfield said she and Vasu were determined to stay together, and after hours of begging, the university agreed to put them up in a hotel as a pair. It's still a short-term fix. The girls don't know what their long-term living situation might be."We don't have a permanent option," Hatfield said. "We have no idea where we're supposed to go."M.B. Reilly, the university's director of public relations, said staff have worked to quickly address all of the issues Hatfield and Vasu raised. The malfunctioning thermostat was replaced within days; the broken shower head was replaced the same Saturday morning they reported it.They will continue to work with the pair to find an acceptable place for them to live."In support of our students, university staff will personally be reviewing alternative UC housing options with them and their parents shortly," Reilly said in a statement.She added no other students in their building had experienced comparable issues. 1820

Country star Jason Aldean was performing when a gunman began firing on the crowd from inside Mandalay Bay. Now, Aldean is opening up about how he's been coping since the tragedy of Oct. 1, 2017.  "I think you go through a lot of different emotions of being thankful that none of your family and friends was injured. And then you feel guilty," said Aldean. "Those people are there to see your show so that's awful."Since that dreadful night in October, Aldean has struggled with the complexity of his feelings about surviving the country's deadliest mass shooting in modern history.  "And then you start doing that thing, like, 'Man, did that really happen. Did that really happen to us?' It seems so crazy. Like how could that even be a thing?"Aldean said his wife and crew were a great comfort to him, but it was visiting the injured in the hospital and the birth of his son that put things in perspective. "That helped. Going back to the hospital, going back to Vegas and seeing those people. Seeing some of the strength they were having," said Aldean. " People laid up in the hospital and smiling and laughing and just being glad they were alive."His son was born exactly two months after the Las Vegas shooting."Really to me, he just gave me something else to focus on. CINCINNATI — Double majoring in neuroscience and organizational leadership is more than enough to fill the plates of most people.However, University of Cincinnati senior Megdelawit Habteselassie also finds time to serve as student body president and as a member of the UC alumni council.Students have elected other women as student body presidents before Habteselassie, who goes by her family's generational nickname of Sinna. However, she is the first African-American woman to hold the position in UC's 199-year history."I wish it happened sooner," said Habteselassie, 22, from her office in the Steger Student Life Center.The Ohio native's parents emigrated to the United States from Ethiopia more than 20 years ago. She initially planned to go into medicine but decided her passion was in social justice."I want to go into international law and perhaps work for the Gates Foundation, which does phenomenal things for sustainable development," said Habteselassie.However, for now, she is focused on her duties as student body president, which were plenty during the run-up to the university's homecoming earlier this month.She credits a strong network of women, including several mentors, for encouraging her to run."It's good to know that I am in this role because a lot of women helped me be here, and I would certainly say that if those kinds of conversations had happened sooner there probably would've been the first black woman president a lot earlier," she said.Habteselassie said studies show that women need to be asked several times before they will consider running for elected office. That was indeed the case for her, she said, but students greeted her candidacy warmly once she committed to running."It's amazing to see so many people ready for that change on our campus and to welcome me into this leadership role," Habteselassie said .Student body vice president Umaize Savani believes Habteselassie is giving a voice to those whose voices are not heard as loudly as others."To me, it shows that a change is coming to UC and to this country. I also think this reflects the changes that have taken place at UC over the last four years," Savani said.Habteselassie and Savani campaigned on a platform centered around holistic health and specifically destigmatizing issues surrounding mental health."We're working on doing a 'love yourself' campaign on campus and raising money for a mental health advocate award, and we have our co-directors of mental health awareness, who are really striving to expand what it means to be healthy," Habteselassie said.Debra Merchant, vice president of student affairs, said she believes Habteselassie is making the most of every moment."Her leadership opens 'thought doors' for everyone," Merchant said. "I'm a big believer in 'You can't be what you can't see.' Sinna's engagement with students, faculty and staff sends the important message throughout our UC community that leadership is open to all."Habteselassie has a knack for connecting with all types of students, Savani said."She knows how to speak to the student that is struggling while also being able to see eye to eye with a football player," Savani said. "Her respect and love for every single Bearcat continues to astonish me every single day."Habteselassie will graduate this year and plans to move to Washington, D.C., to work for a few years before going to law school.In the meantime, she hopes her election opens doors for women after her."I think the one thing that I think about is -- my mom tells me this, too -- 'Make sure you're not closing the doors behind you and to ensure that you're lifting when you climb,'" she said. 3687
