PARIS, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Arianespace has approved the preparation review of the third Ariane 5 flight, which is expected to lift two communication satellites on Friday from the spaceport in French Guiana, the European launching center said on Tuesday.The prior readiness review approved that "Ariane 5 is now cleared for its May 19 rollout from the Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone, where it will be readied for liftoff on Friday at 5:38 p.m. local time in French Guiana," the space center said in a statement.This dual payload flight will orbit GSAT-8 and ST-2 satellites, with a combined mass of 8,190 kilo grams.Built by Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Company, ST-2 will be utilized by the ST-2 Satellite Ventures joint company of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Company Ltd. for Ku- and C-band relay services across the Middle East, Central Asia, India and Southeast Asia.The lighter passenger GSAT-8, built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), will serve to augment India's Ku- band relay capabilities and offer aircraft navigation assistance over Indian airspace and adjoining areas with its two-channel GAGAN system.The Arianespace started its 2011 busy year for heavy-lift Ariane 5 with the milestone launch of Europe's second Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) on February 16, and then a dual payload on April 22 that orbited Yahsat Y1A and Intelsat New Dawn satellites.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Construction began on China's first low-speed maglev line Monday in Beijing, a project that will make China only the second country with a low-speed maglev line after Japan.The project marked China's ability to industrialize low-speed maglev technologies, said Chang Wensen, father of China's maglev technology and professor at the National University of Defense Technology.The 10-kilometer line runs from Shimenying Station in west Beijing's Mentougou District to Pingguoyuan Station in the Shijingshan District.The line, a section of Line S1 on the Beijing subway network, is expected to be completed in 2013 with a designed speed of 100 to 120 km per hour.China's research of maglev technologies was started in the 1980s by a team led by Chang Wensen. A 204-meter test line in central China's Hunan Province and a 1.5-km test line in north China's Hebei Province were built jointly by Beijing Maglev Technology Development Co., Ltd. and National University of Defense Technology.The intensity of the magnetic field had been tested as safe, according to a test report of Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences.The cost of the low-speed maglev line was estimated at 300 million yuan (4.6 million U.S. dollars) per kilometer, slightly more than light rail, but cheaper than the subway, which cost more than 600 million yuan a kilometer, said Li Jie, director of technology research center of National University of Defense Technology.The technology was also under consideration for Line 8 of the subway network in Shenzhen, in south China's Guangdong Province, said Liu Zhiming, board chairman of Beijing Maglev Technology Development Co., Ltd.."If Shenzhen adopts the technology, Line 8 will be China's second low-speed maglev line," he said.The world's first low-speed maglev line, at 8.9 km long, was completed in Japan in March 2005.Maglev, short for magnetic levitation, technology uses a large number of magnets to lift and propel a vehicle, making it faster, quieter and smoother than conventional wheeled transport systems.High-speed maglev vehicles can reach speeds of 450 km per hour and are usually used in long distance transportation, while low-speed maglev lines are usually used in short distance transportation.Construction also began on another seven lines on the Beijing subway network Monday.With an investment of 82 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars), the eight lines will total 113.7 km in length and are expected to open from 2013 to 2015.Beijing has 16 lines under construction.

N'DJAMENA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno said Wednesday while meeting visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that his country is willing to expand cooperation with China in infrastructure building, agriculture, health care and other fields.During the meeting with Yang, who arrived here Tuesday for an official visit, the president said the Chadian-Chinese relations are based on equality, mutual respect and noninterference in each other's interior affairs. He said China has successfully completed a number of aid projects in Chad, which greatly facilitated the social and economic development of the African country.Deby said Chad is willing to boost cooperation with China in such areas as infrastructure construction, agriculture and health care, and hopes to strengthen coordination with China on international affairs.For his part, Yang said Chad has undertaken the path of national reconciliation, political stability and social progress under the leadership of President Deby, and has made significant achievements in economic development and improvement of the welfare of the Chadian people.He said bilateral relations are developing rapidly since the re-establishment of diplomatic ties, with cooperation and exchanges at different levels significantly increased. WUHAN, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were comfirmed dead and nine others injured when a farmer's tricycle rolled over into an 8-meter deep gully at about 2:30 p.m. Monday at a village in Lichuan City, Hubei province.Eight passengers were found dead on the spot. The eleven wounded were hastened to the hospital. But two of them died on the way.Sources with the Lichuan government said the farmer's vehicle carried the passengers illegally. The rescue operation continued until midnight. The actual cause for accident was still under investigation.
