SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The City Council is expected to decide on a proposal that would turn two purchased hotels into housing for San Diego’s homeless, and on Monday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer made a push in favor of the plan.Part of California’s Project Homekey includes an initiative to provide more homeless Californians with permanent housing amid the COVID-19 crisis. A lot of loitering, crowds, so we're not informed on what this will look like," said Josh.He said if the purchase gets approved, he wants there to be strict guidelines for tenants."People who are elderly, have kids, or demonstrated work history. A qualified facility where you have to meet standards to come in,” Josh told ABC 10News.The City Council is slated to discuss the proposal and release a decision on Tuesday.Meanwhile, city leaders and the SDHC said security will be ramped up around the new apartments, with two live-in managers on site and residents will be the only ones allowed inside.If the project is approved, the transformation could happen as early as December 2020. 2140

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has left a big question mark in regards to NCAA athletics. However, that is not the case with California Junior Colleges, otherwise known as the CCCAA, as they have already come up with a plan for the fall. That means for the next 5 months, athletic fields at Mesa College will be quiet until early 2021."There was a lot of talk," says Mesa College Athletic Director Ryan Schumaker, "and a lot of plans, that included getting sports back on the field quicker. But it just didn't seem feasible, especially when we saw the state start to take steps backwards. It just seemed like the right thing to do, to push it back as far as we could."So in the case of Mesa College, all 21 of their athletic teams will not get started until some point in the spring."The goal is to get our student athletes on campus safely, as well as our staff," says Mesa College Head Football Coach Gary Watkins. "I know we won't start practice until February, but there may be some time in January to get in front of the boys. At that time, will get them acclimated physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, they have to be all in on their academics, and their future development."And with will all sports being pushed back until the spring, the athletic department at Mesa will have to figure out how to share the facilities."The spring is now split into two distinct seasons. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Independent System Operator again Sunday reminded consumers throughout the state conserve energy, warning of more possible rotating outages.SDG&E said early in the day Sunday that customers should be prepared for possible outages to be called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.The news comes after a flex alert was issued statewide from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Monday, September 7.“Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Understandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time,” SDG&E wrote.Just before 6:30 p.m., CAISO issued a Stage 2 emergency and warned that consumers should conserve power until 9 p.m. to avoid rolling outages. Stage 2 is the step before rolling outages are ordered.The energy provider said turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of the dishwasher, clothes washers and dryers, and switching off unused lighting can all help conserve energy.SDG&E also said the Valley Fire, which has currently burned 1,500 acres near Alpine, has impacted electrical equipment and caused power outages.SDG&E said it’s working with Cal Fire in an effort to restore power quickly. 1421

July 1, with those who violate San Diego parking rules receiving written warnings. Starting Wednesday, July 15, citations with fines will be issued.City officials said resumption of parking enforcement is “identified as one small step toward restoring San Diego’s economy.”“We know many residents are looking forward to visiting their favorite restaurants, breweries, cafes, shops and stores, and restarting our local economy. As the City begins to take careful and measured steps to reopen, we need to make sure parking enforcement, especially in our business districts, allows for a healthy flow of customers, ensures accessibility and reinvests back into our communities,” said San Diego’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer Erik Caldwell.Chris Clark, with San Diego’s Small Business Alliance, added, "Like all San Diegans, local business owners have shouldered the burden of our unprecedented situation the past few months. Now, we are finally starting to sense a return to business and life as usual. While free parking is convenient, parking meters help incentivize turnover at prime parking spaces in business districts. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive.You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass.
