Fewer people are choosing to live in senior housing amid the pandemic. Occupancy has gone down more than 2.5% for two quarters in a row.A trade group for housing providers looked at numbers from April through September of this year and found the senior housing sector is experiencing the largest drop in occupancy on record.“We have heard from people who, you know, their first priority is to get older parents out of more hazardous locations, such as nursing homes, and when they are looking for options in terms of where to move them, part of the option of course is to bring them into their home,” said Danielle Arigoni, Director of AARP Livable Communities.Arigoni says the financial benefits of living in a multi-generational home are getting some people to think about it during the pandemic. But others are avoiding it because of concerns about COVID-19 exposure risks for older family members.Arigoni says there is a renewed interest in accessory dwelling units. That's something UMH Properties is working on now with its "care cottages." The service will let people lease a prefabricated 1 bedroom 1 bath temporary home that you put on your property.“We believe we can get it approved because it's going to be temporary. It's going to be ADA compliant. And with those things in mind, the zoning department of a town should approve bringing the manufactured home onto somebody's lot where it's zoned as a single-family residential lot,” said Sam Landy, CEO of UMH Properties.Landy says COVID-19 sparked the idea for the “care cottages,” but he expects there to be interest in them beyond the pandemic.The company has received dozens of people asking about the care cottages since it started marketing them in September.If you have older family members moving into your home instead, AARP recommends having certain parameters around chores and expectations. FLINT, Mich. – The City of Flint will no longer auction off illegal guns seized by its police department. Instead, the weapons will be destroyed.Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Police Chief Phil Hart made the announcement during a press conference last week, saying they hope to keep guns off the streets.Officials say they will start by immediately disposing of 250 guns that previously had been on Flint streets.According to a press release from the city, the previous administration began auctioning off seized firearms in 2017, selling hundreds of guns to the highest bidder. That included semi-automatic rifles as well as handguns, pistols, and shotguns, the city says.Last year, the city says it auctioned off more than 1,200 guns, which brought in more than 0,000 to the city’s general fund.While gun auctions are legal and serve lawful gun buyers, the current mayor says his administration will not permit the auctioning of firearms to ensure none of weapons fall into the wrong hands again.“From Day 1, we put a priority on leading this city with a strong social conscience. Human life is always more valuable than dollars,” Mayor Neeley said. “Under this administration, we will never again line our pockets by selling guns. It is unconscionable that after seizing these illegal weapons that anyone would gamble by putting them back on the streets where they could again fall into the wrong hands.”Chief Hart says the profit from selling the firearms is not worth the risk of them being used in future violent events.“If we want to look at dollars and cents, we also have to look at the cost of gun violence in our community,” said Hart. “It does not make sense for law enforcement to be in the business of selling weapons.”The city cited a 2019 report from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, which said gun violence costs the U.S. 9 billion annually and in Michigan, gun violence costs .9 billion — 6 for every resident.“Based on that average, the cost of gun violence in the city of Flint is at least triple the revenues the gun auctions,” the city wrote.Instead of auctioning off the guns, the weapons will be turned over to the Michigan State Police for proper disposal. 2205

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Saturday for all 67 counties in the state as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads toward the Gulf of Mexico.The first named storm of this season, Alberto is expected to strengthen as it moves up the Gulf this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said, bringing heavy rains and possible floods to Florida and much of the Southeast in the coming days."Do not think that only areas in the cone will be impacted -- everyone in our state must be prepared," Scott said in a statement.Click here to track the stormCuba is expected to get as much as 15 inches of rain, the hurricane center said in an advisory Saturday morning, and the Florida Keys and South Florida could get as much as 10 inches."Swells from Alberto will create dangerous surf and rip currents along the Gulf Coast," the National Weather Service said.The center of the storm is expected to be move close to the western tip of Cuba on Saturday afternoon, then track up the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the night through Monday.Hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but Alberto apparently missed the memo. For 20 minutes, the Southwest Airlines jet was a normal flight from New York to Dallas with 149 people aboard.The plane was flying at 32,500 feet Tuesday morning as passengers settled in for the three-hour flight.Suddenly, the alarms blared in the cockpit as what sounded like explosions boomed from the left side of the plane. Oxygen masks swiftly dangled from the ceiling.What followed was a terrifying sequence of events that ended with one woman dead, seven people injured and an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport.'Everybody was going crazy'Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 took off from LaGuardia at 10:43 a.m., and landed in Philadelphia about 11:20 a.m., federal officials said.The Boeing 737 was headed to Dallas with 144 passengers and five crew members . For about 20 minutes, everything seemed calm. Then what sounded like an explosion suddenly jolted the plane, passenger Marty Martinez said."I heard a loud boom and about five seconds later, all the oxygen masks deployed," he said. "I immediately knew something was wrong. It just didn't register what could have been."Something in the engine broke apart midair and burst through the window, passengers said. The shattered window partially sucked a woman out of the plane as passengers struggled to pull her back in."Everybody was going crazy, and yelling and screaming," Martinez said. "As the plane is going down, I am literally purchasing internet just so I can get some kind of communication to the outside world."Objects flying outAs the plane quickly descended, passengers close to the woman scrambled to hold her tight. We were still doing CPR when the plane landed," said nurse Peggy Williams. "We made every effort that we could possibly make to save this woman's life."Martinez said it was a rough landing, and he wasn't sure if the plane was going to crash. The jet could have been landing on a freeway or a skyscraper for all he knew, he said."I didn't know if we were going to be running into a building. I didn't know what state the plane or even the pilot was in, if we were in condition to land," he said. Southwest 1380, it doesn't matter we will work it out there," the air traffic controller said.The air traffic controller asked other planes to prepare for the airport to be shut down.The investigationThe National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary look at the engine shows one of its 24 fan blades was missing.A first look showed evidence of metal fatigue where the blade attached to a hub, according to Chairman Robert Sumwalt of NTSB.The crew reported damage to one of the aircraft's engines as well as the fuselage and a window, the Federal Aviation Administration said.Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said the plane was inspected Sunday, but he had no details on what parts were examined. "I'm not aware of any issues with the airplane or any issues with the engine involved," he said."This is a sad day and our hearts go out to the family and the loved ones of the deceased customer," he said. "We will do all that we can to support them during this very difficult time."The woman killed was identified as Jennifer Riordan, 43, according to CNN affiliate KOAT. It said she worked for Wells Fargo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
