A 16-year-old girl suffered bites to her foot and ankle after a shark attacked her in Florida, authorities said.The girl was boogie boarding in the Atlantic Ocean off Amelia Island on Friday when a shark bit her on the back of her foot, according to Sheriff Bill Leeper of to Nassau County, Florida.She was able to get free and make it up to the pool area of the resort she was staying at, where first responders met her.The girl was transported to a local hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries to her foot, heel and ankle, and received several stitches, Leeper said.Leeper said although they don't get many shark attacks in the area, this is a good reminder that sharks like to feed in the morning and late afternoon and to be careful during those times. 785

A Macomb County, Michigan, mom is furious.She says her special needs son was silenced and shamed by adults at a school Christmas concert in Clinton Township.Her anger and disappointment has been echoed by many on social media. The L’Anse Creuse Middle School concert was earlier this week and 14-year-old Dominic Schroeder was super excited. He plays the saxophone and has been practicing the performance in band class and at home too.Dominic is cognitively impaired. Because of his special needs, he often practices with a plastic digital saxophone with ear-buds. The device can help the instructors measure his progression. On concert day Dominic was ready to perform using his own shiny saxophone. But according to his family, Dominic was told by an administrator that he could not play his instrument with the band. He was instructed to use the plastic saxophone - with earphones.Dominic was upset and his loved ones were too. We’re told he and his family did not agree to this. They also say, with this device, Dominic’s the only one who can hear his music. It is silent to the rest of the world.The family believes this is discrimination and exclusion. 19-year-old Sydney Aiello was a young woman who a Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher described as a joy to have in class.Aiello was close friends with Meadow Pollack, one of 17 people to be killed by a mass shooter last year. Aiello's mother said that her daughter felt survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following the events of Feb. 14, 2018.Aiello's mom said her daughter struggled to attend college classes because she was afraid of being in a classroom and was sad — but never asked for help before she killed herself.Now, Aiello's mother hopes her story can help save others."It breaks my heart that we've lost yet another student from Stoneman Douglas," Ryan Petty said.Petty's daughter Alaina died in the shooting. Since the Parkland tragedy, he's focused his efforts on suicide prevention, worried that traumatized might take their own lives.Petty says communication is key when dealing with loved ones who may be considering suicide — asking them directly if they've had suicidal thoughts or have thought about acting on them."My advice to parents is to ask questions, don't be afraid.
