LA JOLLA (CNS) - Two passengers riding in a speeding car died today when the vehicle hit a palm tree on Girard Avenue, police said.The crash happened at 3:16 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding westbound on 1000 Torrey Pines Road, said Officer Dino Delimitros of the San Diego Police Department.The 26-year-old man driving the Altima made a left turn onto 7500 Girard Ave., lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree, the officer said.Two male passengers, ages 19 and 21, received major injuries and died at the scene, Delimitros said.The injured driver was taken to a hospital and will be held on suspicion of driving under the influence, the officer said. 696

(KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams.While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity.At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams.The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery.The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said. (CNS) - Firefighters labored for a fifth day Wednesday to subdue a wildfire that has blackened thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County, leveling several dozen homes and outbuildings and forcing widespread evacuations.The blaze dubbed the Valley Fire erupted for unknown reasons early Saturday afternoon off Spirit Trail and Carveacre Road in Japatul Valley, southeast of Alpine, according to Cal Fire.The wind-driven inferno had burned an estimated 17,665 acres and is 27% contained as of Wednesday evening. The blaze has destroyed 26 "habitable structures" and 25 "minor structures" and resulted in two injuries, though it was not clear if the victims were firefighters or civilians.Gusty winds stoked the flames burning within established fire lines during the night, but the Santa Ana conditions -- strong, warm and dry air currents blowing from east to west -- did not intensify as much as meteorologists predicted they might, Cal Fire reported.
