Thousands more people are one paycheck away from becoming homeless.As a county, San Diego has the fourth-largest homeless population in the United States. To help, we've created this resource guide to help those in need for assistance.WHERE TO START Dial 211: You can reach a free, confidential hotline for help with multiple services. Representatives are on hand 24 hours a day to answer all questions. Last year, the hotline received more than 500,000 calls, about a fourth of which dealt with housing concerns. The same services are provided online. Learn more FOR HOUSING City of San Diego: Anyone in need of a bed in one of the city’s four emergency shelters and three bridge shelters will be placed through an assessment, with space going to the “most vulnerable people first”, the city reports. The assessment can be taken at multiple locations around the city, most of which provide other services to the homeless. Learn more San Diego Housing Commission: The City of San Diego also partners with the SDHC to provide care for individuals and families in different stages of homelessness through shelters, help with rental payments, and federal housing vouchers. Learn more MULTI-CARE AGENCIES Veterans Village of San Diego: The group has transitional housing for eligible veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. VVSD says the rent for the furnished apartments is affordable and based on income. Employment and rehabilitation services are also provided. Learn more Alpha Project: There are hundreds of housing units available in Downtown San Diego, Chula Vista, Escondido, and Normal Heights. Employment and hospice care are available. Learn more Father Joe’s Villages: In addition to emergency shelters, the charity provides short-term rental assistance, permanent supportive housing, and affordable apartment units. Basic needs like showers and meals are also available. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego region needs to develop new housing units at a pace not seen since before the housing bubble burst to meet the demand.A new report from the San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs to add about 171,000 new houses, condos and apartments by 2029, based on a state projection of population growth. That pace, of about 17,000 homes a year, hasn't been reached since 2003. And in 2017, the county only authorized 10,000 new units.HOUSING COVERAGE: 506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two brothers convicted of killing their parents at their Beverly Hills mansion have been reunited in prison, according to the Associated Press.A spokesperson for the corrections department says 47-year-old Erik Menendez has moved into the same housing unit as his 50-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez.Both brothers are serving life sentences for shooting and killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.Officials say Lyle was moved from Mule Creek State Prison to San Diego’s R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in February, where his brother has been held in a separate unit since 2013. Wednesday, Erik moved into the same facility, where inmates interact in rehabilitation programs. The brothers can now spend time together during meal time and recreational periods. Each of the brothers has served time at three other state prisons. The brothers claim the murders happened after they were sexually abused by their father. Prosecutors said during the trial that the brothers wanted their parents’ multimillion-dollar estate. 1091

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were rescued from atop the border wall in San Diego Sunday evening, Border Patrol said Tuesday. According to a news release, agents spotted three people perched on top of the wall near Otay Mesa around midnight January 5. A man and two women reportedly tried to enter the U.S. illegally by climbing the wall amid dense fog. “The trio became stuck at the top of the wet, slippery wall after smugglers abandoned them,” the agency said. RELATED: Woman tries to smuggle meth with 7-year-old in car, Border Patrol saysSan Diego Fire-Rescue also responded and used a ladder truck to rescue the individuals. Border Patrol says all three people, a 36-year-old man, 20-year-old woman and 18-year-old woman, were Mexican Nationals. All three were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego family of a Los Angeles firefighter who may have been kidnapped in Rosarito, Mexico, is speaking out.It’s been more than two weeks since 20-year veteran LA City firefighter Frank Aguilar was last seen after heading to his second home in Baja, California.“We’re hopeful. We haven't lost hope,” his local cousin Nancy told ABC10 News. She’s only providing a first name, due to safety concerns. “Nobody seems to know anything and it's very frustrating for the family to not know anything."On Wednesday, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that his office learned from Mexican authorities that the 48-year-old firefighter may have been violently kidnapped from his Baja condo. “We will work tirelessly to make sure that Frank is returned safely,” he said in a news conference."[The mayor] did mention that he is going to provide all resources from Los Angeles to help get my dad back,” said daughter Amaris Aguilar.“I had just spoken to my dad the morning that we discovered he was missing. When he left for Rosarito, he was describing how safe or how good he felt in that community. He wanted to retire there,” added daughter Bella Aguilar.The daughters say that his condo was in a guard-gated community.His family has told reporters that his phone is off and they've heard that his condo may have been ransacked, his vehicles are missing and Ring video shows a troubling scene.“We're going to get you back. I love you so, so much,” added Amaris.Late Thursday, the San Diego FBI spokesperson sent ABC10 News the following statement:"The FBI is in contact with its Legal Attache located at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City regarding the Los Angeles fireman reported missing.
