The unemployed will either be given work according to their qualifications or will receive job training.The government has set up training centers, organized job fairs and guided the unemployed into newly created public sector posts such as crossing guards, sanitation workers and parking lot or community security guards.According to a labor bureau report released earlier this year, Shanghai's government had "bought" - or created and paid for - 240,000 jobs by the end of last year.Hiring people as nurses or home care providers for the aged will have the additional benefit of helping the government deal with the city's rapidly aging population.By the end of last year, the city's unemployment rate was 4.4 percent.And a new law that is in the pipeline is expected to improve employment services. BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- China recorded 68.02 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade of electronics and information products in January, a growth of 19.3 percent year-on-year.     Sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Saturday that the growth rate was 12.9 percentage points lower than the year-earlier level.     The total trade volume included 38.29 billion U.S. dollars in export value, up 22.9 percent, and 29.73 billion dollars in import value, up 15.2 percent.     The sources said the growth rate for exports was 12.8 percentage points lower than the same month of last year, while that for imports was 13 percentage points lower.     Of the total exports, wholly owned foreign companies accounted for 24.94 billion U.S. dollars, or 65.1 percent, the sources added.

CHANGSHA -- Central China's Hunan Province said it has taken effective measures to prevent epidemics after about 2 billion rats chomped their way through cropland around the Dongting Lake, the country's second largest freshwater lake. "It's not possible for rodent-borne diseases to break out in the lake area," said Chen Xiaochun, vice director of the provincial health department. Local health authorities have been watching closely over the rodent situation after the rats fled their flooded island homes and invaded 22 counties around the Dongting Lake last week, he told a press conference on Wednesday. Results of their observation are reported daily to the provincial health department and the public, he said. Meanwhile, local health and disease prevention and control authorities have intensified management of raticide and pesticide, for fear they might contaminate food and water, Chen added. No human infection of any rat-borne disease has been reported in the central Chinese province since 1944. The provincial government also ruled out widespread suspicions that rats flooded the area because one of their natural enemies -- snakes -- had been served at dinner tables. "The Dongting Lake area is not an ideal habitat for snakes," said Deng Sanlong, a top forestry official in the province, "and the only two species that inhabitate the region feed largely on fish and frogs." He said the top enemy of the rats are hawks that spend winter in the wetland around the lake but fly away in spring. China's Ministry of Agriculture and the Hunan provincial government have allocated 900,000 yuan in total to eradicate the rats.

KUNMING - Altogether 248 students fell sick after eating a school lunch including kidney beans in Southwest China's Yunnan Province on Thursday, local authorities confirmed early on Friday.Investigators suspected the beans were undercooked.The students, from Zhuyuanzhen Township High School in Fuyuan County, complained of vomiting and nausea late Thursday afternoon and were put under medical observation at night, a spokesman with the Fuyuan County government said.By 8:00 am on Friday, about 170 students were still under observation at four local hospitals.Hospital sources said none of the cases was critical.Kidney beans contain lectin, a toxic agent that can cause diarrhea if the beans aren't heated thoroughly, according to health officials.
