SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The International Olympic Committee and Japanese government made an historic announcement Tuesday to postpone the 2020 summer Olympic games in Tokyo due to the coronavirus.Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed on Twitter that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games have been delayed until no later than summer 2021.The announcement left several San Diegan Olympic hopefuls dashed of any immediate Olympic dreams."It's kind of hard to wrap your head around it because you have been training so long for this one moment," Allison Halverson said back in Februaray. Her tone changed Tuesday."I was kind of like, 'Ok. That's good to know.' Now I can kind of refocus and figure out how to train for that," Halverson said.Swimmer Michael Chadwick says the lack of open pools is sidelining any training, making competition right now even less of a possibility."Too much has happened too quickly for us to really understand what the ramifications of it all are," Chadwick said. "We as athletes cannot expect to make a push right now, physically, it's just impossible. Especially with not having a pool open."A new date for the postponed games has not been announced. 1199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego could be closing as part of an effort to integrate women into the Marines.MCRD has been in San Diego for about 100 years, but it currently does not have facilities specifically for female Marines.According to a Military.com report, Marine Corps officials are looking at other options in order to meet the integration mandate from Congress. One proposal would create a single boot camp that would include the necessary facilities, rather than the current process of dividing recruits between MCRD in San Diego and the boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. In response to a possible closure, the San Diego Military Advisory Council said losing the area boot camp would cost the city.SDMAC Executive Director Mark Balmert said, “So 400 recruits a week come through our location here, about 16,000-17,000 a year. Our studies have shown more than 60,000 of their family members make the trip to San Diego to be a part of their recruit graduation.”Marine officials have already told the Pentagon it cannot add women to boot camps without building new facilities. 1139

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now visible on a downtown San Diego street.Over the weekend, various Black Lives Matter banners were put up on Broadway, between Third Avenue and Kettner Boulevard. The banners showcase the work of San Diego-based artist Anthony Tyson, and they display the message that Black lives of every age, gender, preference, past, and future matter.“You know, not that many people of my color, of my ethnicity is around this area. So, my people can come down and see it, and then also you have people that are used to this area seeing something different. And it gets them to ask the question of ‘what is this?’ and that's all you really need at the end of the day,” Tyson told ABC 10News.Tyson collaborated with the nonprofit Downtown San Diego Partnership for the project.“The Downtown Partnership believes strongly in its duty to ensure organizational efforts are promoting equality and addressing systemic injustice and racial discrimination wherever they exist. In addition to commitments made within the organization, the Downtown Partnership is working to foster a greater sense of cultural vibrancy through placemaking and special projects. Particularly when those efforts can highlight historically disadvantaged cultural institutions and artists,” the organization said in a news release. 1363

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday it is extending a ban on cruise ships operating in U.S. territory through September. The ban was set to end next week, but the agency extended the ban as coronavirus cases rise in 40 states.Florida and California, where many cruises originate or end, both set records for new daily COVID-19 cases recently.RELATED: As cruise ships idle, San Diego region lost up to millionThe CDC says the ban on cruise ship operations will be in effect until, "the expiration of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ declaration that COVID-19 constitutes a public health emergency," "the CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order based on specific public health or other considerations," or Sept. 30.Some cruise lines had already canceled scheduled sailings until Sept. 15 over ongoing discussions with federal officials on how to restart business safely, the Associated Press reported. The Port of San Diego estimates that each cruise ship that visits San Diego generates about 0,000 in regional economic impact, including local shopping, restaurant businesses, and other expenses.Nearly 30 cruises were canceled due to the pandemic, costing about million in lost revenue for the Port of San Diego alone, according to Brianne Page, a public information officer for the Port of San Diego. The cost to regional economic impact could be as high as million. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1499
