In Houston, Texas, everything is bigger, including the city’s problem with PPE litter. Many of the masks, gloves, and bottles of hand sanitizer being used to protect people during the pandemic aren’t being disposed of properly and some are worried it’s becoming a health hazard. Now, city leaders are taking matters into their own hands while trying to take PPE litter off the street“I know that they say everything is bigger in Texas but we definitely don’t want to be known for a big litter problem,” said Martha Castex-Tatum, Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, who is helping launch the city’s new anti-PPE littering campaign.“It’s not only unsightly but it’s also a health issue,” she said. “If the PPE is contaminated, we don’t want other people touching it.”Castex-Tatum says stopping litter before it starts could save money in the long run.“It’s always expensive to pick up litter,” she said. “For instance, this PPE litter ends up in our drains. The city of Houston, we spend million a year cleaning out our drains.”Down the drains and into waterways, where the health impacts could be significant.“Unlike sewage systems, storm water is untreated and it flows directly into our lakes and our rivers and our oceans. There’s no intermediate treatment,” said Rachel Meidl, LP.D., CHMM, a fellow in energy and environment at Rice Univeristy. She says trash attracts trash and that PPE litter is a problem, not only in Houston but around the world.“As it concerns the pandemic, it’s how do we manage it,” Meidl asked. For some Houstonians, the answer to that question is simple.“It takes five seconds of your time to find a trash can,” one local man said about properly disposing PPE. “Just do it.”Just do it: another famous slogan from another famous campaign, something Castex-Tatum hopes Houston can replicate.“It’s important for people to know the message the message that we are trying to send with the anti-litter campaign,” she said. That message is clear: don’t let Houston go to waste.“I hope this inspires other cities across the country to also kick off anti-litter campaign,” Castex-Tatum said. 2113

Instagram announced Tuesday they were kicking off National Bullying Prevention Month by testing two new features that combat users writing comments that are considered bullying and harassing. The social media platform said in a blog post that one of the new features would automatically hide similar, negative comments that have already been reported." We know from research that, while people don't want to be exposed to negative comments, they want more transparency into the types of words that are hidden," Instagram said in the blog post.To see the remarks, Instagram says you can tap on "view hidden comments."Instagram added that they've also expanded their existing systems to include "an additional warning when people repeatedly attempt to post potentially offensive comments."Since launching comment warning, the company said they'd seen a shift in user's behaviors when providing real-time feedback as they are writing negative comments. 956

In the wake of an increase of high-profile school shootings and seemingly round-the-clock news coverage of gun violence, some students are preparing for school in ways their parents never were: bulletproof backpacks.Companies that sell products that offer increased protection from gunfire say they have seen an uptick in sales. That includes Bulletsafe, a Troy, Mich.-based company that sells a panel that can be inserted into most backpacks for added protection.“I think its main use is for people to sleep better at night,” Tom Nardone of Bulletsafe said. “Honestly, I don’t believe they need one right now,” he said. “I think most the people who are buying them are buying them because a parent is afraid.”Nardone’s product is marketed as a notebook-sized bulletproof backpack panel capable of stopping all handgun rounds up to a .44 magnum. He’s the first to admit that the likelihood that your child is near your backpack at the exact moment a shooting happens is slim. Still, parents are buying them with hopes that it’s an added layer of protection in that worst-case scenario.“I’m a dad, too,” Nardone said. “I don’t want to live in a world where my kid needs a bulletproof backpack.”Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit test a backpack with the Bulletsafe backpack panel inside it, and true to its promotion, it stopped rounds from both a 9mm and a .45 magnum. When tested with a higher-powered rifle outside of the specs that the panel is graded to stop, the bullet unsurprisingly penetrated the panel. While the thought of a school shooting may seem unrealistic to some, the reality is that Michigan holds the unwanted distinction as the No. 1 school on the “State of Concern” report released this week by the Educator’s School Safety Network. The report described that during the 2017-2018 school year, more than half of all school-based threats and incidents of violence occurred in 10 states.Michigan tops the list because of a gigantic spike in school threats. The problem became more visible after the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Accoeding ot the Macomb County prosecutor's office, 60 juveniles and 12 young adults were charged with felonies in connection with school threat cases.“There is zero tolerance for that behavior,” Derek Miller, the chief of operations for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said. “You’re dealing with school safety, faculty safety, these copy-cat threats and threats to children will never be tolerated by Eric Smith, or this office.”While the uptick in threats occurred following the Parkland shooting, experts note that Michigan was already trending up in the sheer number of threats before that shooting.Amanda Klinger, the director of operations for the Educator’s School Safety Network, says that more needs to be done.“Educators are really feeling the sting of this,” Klinger said. “This pull on their time, resources and interruption to instruction.”The data collected by ESSN showed that Michigan averages roughly 20 threats per 1 million students. A number of states average less than a dozen threats, some less than 5.While the data doesn’t explain why threats are increasing, it does shine a light on the discussion. Klinger said she hopes that it starts a conversation that goes beyond adding security measures to schools, but training people to see warning signs of violence.“It is easier to buy a metal detector and stand in front of your parents and say, ‘Hey look, we’re working on school safety,’” Klinger said. “It’s a lot more difficult to say we have trained all of our educators in how to look at red flags.”If you’d like to know more about Bulletsafe’s bulletproof backpack panel you can click, here. For more information about the ESSN study that listed Michigan as the number one, “State of Concern,” you can find a complete look at the data, here. 3879

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A young child died due to complications from coronavirus in June, the first confirmed death of a minor in Iowa during the pandemic, the state health department belatedly announced Sunday evening. The Iowa Department of Public Health said the state medical examiner’s office concluded its case investigation Aug. 6 into the death of the child, who was under the age of 5. But the death wasn’t reported in the state’s statistics until Saturday, more than two weeks later.“The child’s death was publicly reported this weekend after ensuring the individual’s identity would remain protected and notifying the family,” the department said in a statement. “We have made every effort to protect the identity of this child, while the family grieves this devastating loss. Again, we send our sincerest condolences.”The department says the medical examiner performed a full range of testing to determine the cause of death and the child’s health history was taken into account.“Ultimately, COVID-19 was deemed the cause of death,” the statement said. The confirmation of the state’s first child death comes one day before dozens of school districts are prepared to begin the school year on Monday — a development that has many educators and parents already on edge.Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered schools to reopen for at least 50 percent in-person instruction, despite a pandemic that has already killed 1,036 people and seen infections soar in recent days. 1475

In the last year, the MeToo movement has led the charge in women speaking openly about sexual harassment, which in turn has caused a number of prominent men in powerful positions to lose their positions of power. Now there are questions on whether the Christmas song "Baby, It's Cold Outside," which was first recorded in 1944, should no longer be played due to its lyrics. Since the 40s, the song has been recorded by dozens of popular artists. WDOK Christmas 102.1 in Cleveland, Ohio cited complaints by listeners in pulling the song from its airwaves last week. Denver's KOSI-FM also stopped playing the song but has since recanted, also citing listener feedback. “We value the opinion of all our listeners and appreciate the feedback we received,” said KOSI 101.1 Program Director, Jim Lawson in a media release. “Respondents voted 95 percent in favor of us keeping the song. While we are sensitive to those who may be upset by some of the lyrics, the majority of our listeners have expressed their interpretation of the song to be non-offensive.”Some suggest the theme of the song is that a woman is being harassed to stay at a man's home and have another drink on a cold night. In the song, the woman suggests she should leave multiple times, only for the male singer to persuade her not to. Here are the full lyrics to the song: I really can't stay - Baby it's cold outside 1412
