SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A staph infection led to the amputation of a 3-year-old boy's legs weeks after his family arrived in San Diego for a vacation.The Baumkirschners and some friends arrived in their RVs from Arizona in early October and immediately set up camp along Mission Bay.3-year-old Beauden and his two older sisters were part of a group that went for a ride on their bikes."He fell off his bike and scratched his knee. We put on antibacterial spray with a band-aid, and off we went," said his father Brian Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says Beauden spent the next few hours riding bikes, running around, and at one point, playing in the dirt. Early in the evening, Beauden told him he wasn't feeling well."He said, 'My tummy hurts. Is it bedtime?'" said Baumkirschner.The next morning, Beauden woke up with a fever and eventually started favoring his right leg, where he had a scrape just under his knee. When he became lethargic the next day, his parents rushed him to urgent care, and then Rady Children's Hospital. Brian says his son's right knee was swelling up and turned purple."It started spreading up, his legs, down his leg, in his arms, and down to this hands," said Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says doctors eventually diagnosed Beauden with a MSSA staph infection. Another type of staph infection, MRSA, is more associated with bacteria in the bloodstream."They kept telling us that there was swelling. All of his extremities are shutting down," said Baumkirschner.Beauden had developed a complication: toxic shock syndrome. His little body started to shut down. Beauden developed sepsis. His kidneys started to fail."It's been every parent’s worst nightmare. You can’t do anything. You’re helpless," said Baumkirschner.There were several leg surgeries to relieve the pressure. Baumkirschner says there were some harrowing days, but his son pulled through. On Monday, doctors had to amputate his legs below the knee.Baumkirschner says he's just grateful is son is alive. He's optimistic Beauden's arms and hands can be saved.Baumkirschner says doctors at Rady Children's Hospital told him similar serious staph infections are rare, and they only a see a few cases every year.Doctors also couldn't pinpoint exactly when or where Beauden contracted the staph bacteria.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family with expenses. 2365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Albertsons LLC, Safeway Inc., and The Vons Companies, Inc. have agreed to pay at least 0,000 after an investigation by the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) over illegal business practices.The investigation stemmed from the grocery stores' "Monopoly" game promotion, in which customers received "Monopoly" coupons toward discounts and potentially prizes. ABC said the violations arose out of sales of alcohol included in the 2018 promotion.The "Monopoly" promotion was held at Albertsons stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pac N Save, and Pavilions locations.The promotion advertised certain beer brands by MillerCoors as part of the game. Customers received additional chances to win prizes if they purchased those brands, according to ABC."This particular violation gave these retailers a competitive advantage by offering consumers a gift or premium for purchasing alcoholic beverage products," ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith said in a release.ABC filed action against nearly 600 stores across California, accusing the companies of violation several regulations. The agency says the "California Alcoholic Beverage Control Act prohibits the giving away of premiums, gifts or free goods in connection with the sale or marketing of alcoholic beverages."The act prevents alcohol companies from engaging in anti-competitive behavior and gaining an unfair advantage.As part of the probe, the three companies agreed to pay 0,000 in fines, 0,000 due within 30 days and the remaining 0,000 stayed on the condition the companies violate the similar regulations over the next two years. 1643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Strike Team called to battle the Kincade Fire returned home Halloween night, and told 10News of the harrowing fight.The team was comprised of five engines and 21 firefighters from Imperial Beach, Coronado, San Diego, and Chula Vista, according to Battalion Chief Rob Hartman. The group spent four days on the front lines."The resources were very limited just because of everything going on in the state," Hartman said, adding there was no air support in the area where they were fighting the fire.Another challenge they faced was, "just finding a water source. Sometimes out in the country, it's not like there's a fire hydrant every 300 feet. We had to drive a ways to get water to fill up and get back into the fight again."Hartman said they got hardly any sleep and worked in constant dark smoke and strong winds."This is your area, you want to save everything but there are just times where it's just not going to happen."Hartman said it was a struggle to save some homes. One firefighter spotted a home down a narrow driveway that was starting to catch fire."It was just so dangerous, the road was so narrow, there was no place to turn around. The house was already, it was going to be over the amount of water we had and we had to just turn to the guy and say this is going to be a loser. We're not going to be able to do this safely," Hartman said.He described the struggle of losing any businesses or homes during the battle, "you try to put yourself in the position of the owner, so you want to safe the house, you want to save every house... Sometimes it's a little heart-wrenching."Ultimately the strike team stopped the fire line, protecting the City of Windsor.Hartman said they remain ready to deploy if needed. 1764

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Southern California athlete said his life was changed forever from a stem cell product he said came from a San Diego company. “It’s been tough. And it’s still tough,” said Alex Reyes. Team 10 interviewed Reyes at a San Bernardino park, where he took a few moments to play with his young children. Those are the moments he treasures because last year, even holding his kids was something he could not do. “I couldn’t walk for about three and a half to four weeks. I was on a bedpan. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life,” Reyes said.This is coming from a man used to taking punches. He has several accomplishments in mixed martial arts, including King of the Cage Junior Welterweight and Lightweight Champion, as well as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Absolute Purple Belt Champion. Reyes was signed to the UFC back in September of 2017 to compete in the Lightweight Division. In the UFC, he was known as the Executioner. “It was just the beginning for me,” Reyes said.He started doing stem cell injections last year to help with an old back injury. “It was kind of nagging,” he told Team 10.The first one he tried went well. “It helps regenerate the tissue… there was improvement, and I felt better,” he said. The second time, Reyes said he went to a different clinic in Las Vegas in June 2018. According to his lawsuit, the product used was from the ReGen Series?, developed and manufactured by Genetech. Genetech is not related to the biotechnology company Genentech.“After I got the injection a few days later, I couldn’t walk anymore, I couldn’t stand I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t move. It was really bad,” Reyes said. The lawsuit states patients from all over the country used the Genetech stem cell products from the ReGen Series?, but there were problems. The court documents show Health Departments in Texas and Florida received notification of bacteria in patients who received those injections. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? Then they say, that's too many," said Rodriguez. Tuesday the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to set up a million dollar trust fund for the county to use to invest in affordable housing. The vote followed a brief presentation by staff detailing the housing-related hurdles in the San Diego region, including that more than 3,500 affordable units have been lost in the last 20 years. 1192
