LITTLETON, Colo. — In one Colorado neighborhood, life is quiet, which makes what happened last Sunday hard to understand for many residents.A man named Scott Smith was arrested after claiming that his wife, Kanokwan Smith, tried to kill him with a butcher knife in their Littleton home. In an affidavit detailing the incident, he said he had no choice but to shoot and kill her. As of Sunday evening, Scott had not been charged in connection to the case and he is not in custody.For neighbor Dominique Naylor, who has known Kanokwan for more than a decade, the pain is unbearable. She said she was a hard worker and juggled three jobs."She’ll never be able to wrap her arms around her little girl again and he shouldn’t have that right," Naylor said. "He shouldn’t be out and he shouldn’t be free."She said there's not a question in her mind that Scott killed her, and other neighbors and friends agree, adding that Scott "wasn't the kind of person you ever wanted to see (Kanokwan) with."She said anybody who knew her friend knows she wouldn't hurt a fly."It just seems so unfair to live in a world that doesn’t have her in it because she’s just so kind and worked so hard and how could anyone hurt her?" LARGO, Florida — In the span of about 10 minutes, jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted cop killer Marco Parilla handed down two sentences. Only one was correct. And, it isn't what family members of fallen Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek were hoping for.The jury had supposedly unanimously decided death was the appropriate penalty, but then the judge noticed some numbers scribbled out on the forms and asked the jury to go back and confirm all 12 jurors agreed on death.  Upon their return to the courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of life in prison, as only 10 jurors voted for the death penalty and two for life in prison.The judge, explaining to Kondek's family and friends that under a new Florida law, the decision to sentence someone to death must be unanimous. The jurors made a paperwork error filling out their verdict that led to the confusion.Kondek's widow Theresa couldn't believe an error was made."Relief, we felt like justice was served for Charlie. We waited three years for this and then to have it taken away that was a little tough," Kondek said. "It’s closure for us. Obviously, we wanted the death penalty."Kondek said this chapter of her life is over and all she wants to do is move forward and live a life that will honor her fallen husband. "No one wins. Either way, my husband will never come home," Kondek said.  Parilla was convicted of murdering Officer Charles Kondek of the Tarpon Springs Police Department back in 2014.On Thursday, Parilla told the family he was ashamed of what he did and tried to apologize to the fallen officer's family.After learning Parilla would not face the death penalty, family members told him in their victim impact statements that they hoped he died in prison sooner rather than later."You are an animal and I hope you die the worst death possible, a shiv across the neck or something," Charles Kondek, the fallen officer's father told Parilla. 2038

LIMON, Colo. -- When they first teed off this fall, the Limon High School boys’ golf team wasn’t sure what to expect.“We try to give 100% effort,” said Brady Rockwell.“We just kind of have to keep moving forward,” said senior Kory Tacha.They played with the same competitive spirit they always have.“They just want to compete,” said head golf coach Andrew Love. “And we wanted them to have that opportunity.”After all, "Badger Pride" isn’t just an empty expression around here.“Two back-to-back championships,” said Trey Jeffries.“Two-time state champs,” Love said.Yet this team isn’t exactly what you might expect.“Some of them have never even picked up a club before,” said Trey Hines.The 2020 Limon golf team is actually the Limon football team.“Almost all of the football players are out here,” said Hines, the quarterback of the football team.The boys were essentially forced into a more socially distant sport by the coronavirus.“It’s a work in progress for all of us, I think,” Tacha said. “Golf is just one thing to take our mind off all the changes and have a little bit of normalcy. We just want to be out here doing something.”“There’s no trash talking in golf, really,” laughed senior Gaige Hilferty, who also wrestles and plays baseball. “I’ve always wanted to golf, and the school never offered it.”“I’ve never really been a golfer,” said Rockwell, a cornerback on the football team.In fact, there was no golf team at all in Limon until COVID-19 disrupted the world of high school sports.“They were like, ‘Well, what are we going to do, coach?’” said Love, who is also the head football coach. “And I was like, ‘Well, we can create a golf team!’ Almost half-joking. Kind of hoping that it wouldn’t happen, and it did.”What it did was kept this team together.“We had about 22 kids out here,” Hines said.It kept them social.“I’m definitely glad we’re just doing something out here,” Hines said. “And not sitting at home mourning the loss of football. I’d definitely rather be competing at something.”And kept them competitive.“I’m definitely learning something new and getting better at it,” Rockwell said.A little diversion for the reigning back-to-back Colorado Class 1A football champions.“You have to have the nice, proper clap,” Hilferty said. “Not the yelling and screaming that goes hand-in-hand with football. Golf is a game of patience.”“Hopefully this year we can do the same thing,” Love said.Limon finished its golf season at the end of September and has now restarted its football program thanks to new guidance from the Colorado High School Activities Association. After initially announcing football would be played next spring in Colorado, CHSAA recently reversed that decision, allowing teams to play this fall if they opted for Season A.“I’m just looking forward to starting play,” Rockwell said. “I want to play as soon as possible.”The Limon Badgers will play their first football game of the season this coming Monday, Oct. 12 against Yuma High School. (KGTV) -- The man caught on video being arrested outside a La Mesa trolley stop has filed a lawsuit against the City of La Mesa.The lawsuit was filed by Amaurie Johnson against the City of La Mesa, Matt Dages, and six John Does.The lawsuit alleges arrest without a probable cause, negligence, excessive force, and violence because of race.The suit comes after viral video showed Johnson’s controversial arrest outside a La Mesa trolley stop in June. In the video, an officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position on a bench. Mr. Johnson and I are discussing our options as far as moving forward with a complaint with the city of la mesa and potentially taking this to state or federal court," Johnson's attorney Troy Owens said in a previous news release. Troy Owens, Johnson's attorney, told ABC 10News, "Mr. Johnson does not feel that his situation or his experience is unique. And we're seeing a pattern of behavior specifically coming from the City of La Mesa and the La Mesa police department, and that is upsetting to everyone."Owens added, "The City of La Mesa pledged transparency and pledged accountability, and we are seeing the exact opposite of that. We're seeing closed investigations. We're seeing no action being taken we're not being given any information, and it's upsetting ... (KGTV) - A woman who says she was drugged and raped by Daniel Dorado while on a job interview at his La Jolla Restaurant nearly three years ago, is sharing her story only with 10News.Dorado was arrested Wednesday on 18 counts, including rape. RELATED: La Jolla restaurant owner arrested on 18 charges, including rapeThe woman, who requested her identity be protected, said the alleged assault happened at Voce Del Mare on the night of April 27, 2015."I went in there for a job interview, I would never have imagined going through a sexual assault and not knowing how it happened," the accuser said. She tells 10News it began when she answered an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position. She recalls arriving around 9:30 p.m. for an interview with Dorado, who at one point offered her a glass of wine, which she accepted. What happened next is unclear."What I do recall is waking up around four in the morning and I did not have any clothes on...he had nothing on," she said.The people who had been at the restaurant when she arrived were gone, and she said she was locked in, alone with Dorado. It was then that she remembers the phone ringing. On the other end was her mother, wondering where she was. "Honestly I feel because my mother called the restaurant around four something in the morning is what made him let me leave, knowing that somebody knew I was there," she said. The accuser said she knew she'd been assaulted because of how her body felt. "I had vaginal discomfort," she said. "I felt as if there must have been penetration at some point, bruises around my chest, I was in great pain."Although she filed a police report, she was ultimately told there was not enough evidence to charge Dorado, until now. "Knowing that I'm not the only one, I want justice and I hope that if there's anybody out there who knows this individual, who was a victim, that they come forward so there can be justice," she said.  2006
