SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In preparation for high heat expected this month, the county will close six parks.Officials close the parks every August as a safety measure for the typically high temperatures recorded at the sites.The following parks will be closed through Aug. 31:El Capitan Preserve, LakesideHellhole Canyon Preserve, Valley Center Mount Gower Preserve, Ramona Wilderness Gardens, PalaIn addition to the four parks, two more parks will continue to be closed throughout the summer until Labor Day weekend:Agua Caliente Regional Park, Anza BorregoVallecito County Park, JulianThe closures also give Department of Parks and Recreation staff time to perform much needed maintenance at the parks.There are still more than 100 other trails throughout the county to explore during the summer. The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports that one in four of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled for 90 days or more before retirement age. Having a plan for the long term can relieve a lot of stress if the unexpected does happen.One option is disability insurance; there's short-term and long-term. Disability insurance pays a portion of your income if you are suddenly unable to work because of illness, injury, or accident.You can get coverage through an employer or buy it from an insurer. According to State Farm, long-term disability insurance:Pays monthly income directly to you when you're unable to work because of a covered total disability.You choose the length of time you must be disabled before you start receiving benefits (Elimination Period) and the length of time you would receive benefits.Options include a five-year benefit period or a "to age 67" benefit option.Maximum monthly benefit amounts range from 0 to ,000, based on your income and occupation. She suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which would change her life forever. She constantly deals with nausea, dizziness, tetanus, and migraines. Blue has struggled to navigate the healthcare system and because she cannot work is constantly seeking resources so she can remain in San Diego."You have to advocate for yourself because there's no one within the system who is going to do it for you," said Blue. Blue says she does not have the resources to relocate and says San Diego offers a lot of support for TBI survivors. She's relied on Medicaid for medical care, which has helped with resources like a nurse care manager, but she says there are holes in the system."I'm still fighting to get a TBI specialist, I'm still trying to get a lot of the treatments and specialists and therapies that I believe could help me," said Blue. The San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency is ready to help San Diegans whose incomes have been impacted by an unexpected disability:CalFresh: Food assistance:Medi-Cal: Free or low-cost health coverage for children and adults with limited income and resources. If you qualify, you can enroll in Medi-Cal year-round.CalWORKS: Public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home."You may not need our benefits today, but in the future, if you do we're here, and we encourage everyone to apply," said Rick Wanne, Director of Eligibility for the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency.Wanne says the County also has a close relationship with 211. "211 is a great resource for a number of reasons, they can provide general information over the phone about a whole variety of resources here in San Diego, additional food assistance, housing resources, where to find a local medical provider," said Wanne. Wanne said in addition to what the County offers many local nonprofits and other entities provide help.Blue says she's found the following resources helpful when advocating for herself:Legal AidCalifornia Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)Disability Rights CaliforniaBlue says she's also taken advantage of recreation opportunities through Sharp, some of which are free. Sharp also offers support groups for people with various disabilities. Another program that's been instrumental in Blue's recovery is Love Your Brain Yoga, a free program for TBI survivors. "A good part of my day is spent just trying to feel better, just trying to get well enough to do what I need to do that day," said Blue.Blue remains hopeful she'll get the care needed for her healing and says she'll continue to do everything possible to stay in the city she calls home. 4971

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the last week, San Diego Zoo Global has raised more than half-million dollars for Australian wildlife relief.More than 0,000 has been raised through admission sales on Sunday at San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, on-site donations, and online donations, the organization said. That money will go toward wildlife relief in Australia, as its devastating wildfire season scorches millions of acres."We are overwhelmed by the support that this initiative has received from our audiences, and inspired that so many people want to join us in saving Australian wildlife," said Paul Baribault, CEO of San Diego Zoo Global. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Imagine having the power to change your body’s temperature at any time, regardless of how hot or cold it actually is. UC San Diego engineers are on they’re way to doing just that, with a wearable patch.Like a thermostat, it can be changed to a specific temperature, warming or cooling the body, using far less energy than an air conditioning system. “Cooling is a really important issue faced by society today. If you look at news reports there are extreme weather conditions, for example in India, peak temperature could be over 50 degrees Celsius in July," said Renkun Chen, a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego.The patch is made up of thermoelectric alloys - materials that use electricity to create a temperature difference and vice versa - sandwiched between stretchy elastomer sheets. The device physically cools or heats the skin to a temperature that the wearer chooses. The patch is powered by a flexible battery pack. It is made of an array of coin cells all connected by spring-shaped copper wires and embedded in a stretchable material. The system also includes a stretchable circuit board.By regulating the temperature around an individual person, rather than a large room, the smart fabric could potentially cut the energy use of buildings and homes by at least 15 percent.The technology could also be used for people who work in extreme environments, like firefighters or miners. Eventually, Chen and his team want to integrate the technology into clothing. They hope to sell it commercially in the next few years, along with developing a mobile app to control the temperature.
